From Spain: Real Madrid’s strong interest pushes Milan to try close deal for €45m defender

AC Milan have accelerated negotiations over the signing of Sporting CP defender Nuno Mendes, according to a report.

The Rossoneri have been persistently linked with a move for the 18-year-old left-back over the past few weeks as they eye a long-term deputy to Theo Hernandez, given that Diogo Dalot is set to return to Manchester United at the end of the season as things stand.

According to Spanish outlet TF, Real Madrid’s strong interest in Mendes has made Milan accelerate negotiations to try and win the race for the Portugal U21 international, who is now a priority target for the management.

Maldini and Massara have been in talks with the footballer’s environment for some time and hope to convince him, although the Real Madrid hypothesis seduces him.

The report claims that in both cases he would arrive as a back-up, to Ferland Mendy for the LaLiga side and for Theo at Milan. Sporting are asking for €45m for his transfer, a figure that Madrid do not intend to pay, but it is unlikely Milan will either.

Even if he doesnt endup costing his release clause he will most likely cost 20+ mil and even though he can also play as a centreback he is 1.76m tall and frankly i have a hard time believing we would pay that much for a substitute that pretty much is only usable on the left back due to his height.
