GdS: ‘Like Thuram’ – the background on the Milan-Inter derby for Taremi

By Oliver Fisher -

Inter will complete the signing of Mehdi Taremi on a free transfer at the end of the season, and La Gazzetta dello Sport have drawn comparisons with a saga from last summer involving AC Milan.

The paper (as seen below) reports that Taremi will sign a three-year deal worth €3m net per season with Inter having verbally agreed terms in recent months, thus ensuring that a courtship that has lasted for over a year has a marriage as its ending.

The medical visits – first announced and then hastily postponed a month ago so as not to upset Porto – are just a technical step. There are those who are ready to swear that they have already been carried out in great secrecy in recent days in a foreign location.

Taremi was in contact with the Nerazzurri sporting director, who tried hard to get him last July. He was the first name on the list explored as soon as they understood that Romelu Lukaku would not be returning from Chelsea.

Then, once he understood that Porto would not give in unless a big offer came in for a player with a year left on his deal, they let go. They never fully gave up though, not even when at the end of August the Iranian seemed to be AC Milan bound.

The papers adds: ‘With him it went like with Thuram: the player appreciated the courtship and the signature arrived’. Milan also tried for the Frenchman, but ultimately were unable to close the deal and now will see their rivals unveil another free transfer.

The same source also gave some background on why Milan were unable to get a deal for Taremi over the line towards the end of the summer transfer window.

  1. Porto asked for 25-30 mil for this fool most of last summer, refused offers, end up keeping him, just so he can stink up.the pitch this season.
He’s got 3 goals and 1 assist in their league this season.
He was benched. Colombo has better season than Taremi and he also got benched.
Perfect example of a mistake by a club.
Better sell a player a year too early than a year too late.
Thuram and Taremi are Inter starting forward line next season.
Media keeps taking turns on writing stories how Milan will sell a big name this summer but they are mighty quiet on the Lautaro contract extension. He is asking for 10 mil and inter doesn’t want to give it to him.
Media keeps talking about Milan ownership, but inter is about to be repossessed by the bank that gave them loans.

    1. Nah, Inter won’t be repossessed… I’m pretty sure that between Lautaro, Barella, Bastoni and Di Marco they can get close to 300 mill, or add Dumfries as well to get the loan amount.
That said, if they do that Inter would be in a much weaker position than what they are in now despite getting Zielinski and Taremi and having a deep bench with Frattesi, Carlos Augusto, etc . Without getting another striker (Gudmundsson?), not sure if they’d make top 4, though almost all of CL aspiring Serie A teams are going to go through a rebuild phase next year so bets are off.

Marotta is probably going to try and cash some of the youngsters at Inter as well, though if any clubs sniff a fire sale, they won’t offer much.

Anyways, probably this year Inter will either be sold or go through a rebuild phase, they were banking to go much farther in CL and get another 40+ million

  2. With all due respect, but he is 31 years old and is not a quality player. I doubt he can give more than Sanchez or Arna.

    1. How old was Dzeko when he came to Inter?
Arnautovic is not a starter and the team is not tailored to his strengths, if he was a starter he’d give a lot more goals, maybe at a level similar to Giroud if he didn’t get injured during the year.

      1. Dzeko was a top player in his youth. Terami has never been. I am not saying Arna is doing well, I am saying I doubt Taremi will do more.
