GdS: David vs. Guirassy – Milan evaluating two very different striker moulds

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have two strikers on their wish list that stand out above all and they are very different profiles, so which would serve the current team best?

La Gazzetta dello Sport write how Jonathan David and Serhou Guirassy, of Lille and Stuttgart respectively, have a couple of things in common: the first is that Milan wants them, the second is that life has taught them to fight for something.

David, for example, plays and scores for his mother, who passed away in 2019. Born in New York to Haitian parents, American by jus soli, he has represented Canada since his youth. In 2022 he dragged them to their first World Cup after more than thirty years.  He is the striker who replaced Osimhen in Lille, while Guirassy suddenly exploded: 15 goals in 9 games in the Bundesliga, with only Harry Kane did better (17).

For Guirassy, 27, this is his fourth straight year with double figures for goals. He has played and scored consistently since the 2019-20 season: 13 goals with Amiens before scoring another 35 with Rennes. Stuttgart bought him in 2021 for €15 million.

Guirassy is not a build-up striker, he is not the type of attacker who comes to take the ball in the attacking midfield position, instead he attacks the space in behind and shoots (a lot, his average shots per game is 3.67).

Another interesting data concerns the touches in the opponent’s penalty area, 6.78. Certainly more than a few years ago. Guirassy has learned over time to play the No.9 role, but in the past he has also stood out as a wider player. His heat map between 2018 and 2020 tells us that he acted mainly on the left area of the field, converging towards the centre.

Today he presides over the penalty area and moves into the spaces attacking the goal. Technically he is not Giroud, and he is not even David, but he has converted 76.5% of the chances he has had.

David is a different striker. He is certainly more mobile, good at playing in a two-man attack or as a centre-forward. This year he started a bit slowly, with only four goals in 18 games, but in the last five seasons he has always scored double figures. These are his numbers between Gent and Lille: 13, 23, 13, 19, 26.

David is more technical, making speed of execution his strong point. He scores from range, from the right, from the left and also from penalties. This is quality that he shares with Guirassy who has scored 15 penalties out of 18, while the Canadian has four misses in 23 attempts.

This year’s statistics are tainted by a shady start to the season – an average of 0.30 Expected Goals per Game, 33.3% shots on target from dangerous chances for example – but the 61.5% of successful dribbles shows the confidence is still there.

Milan are studying both of the strikers and in January they could move for one of the two, they just need to figure out who serves best.
