GdS: Three defenders, a midfielder and striker question – Milan’s January plans

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan recorded a nice win in the Coppa Italia last night, and for the next few days attention will turn to the various January reinforcements the management are seeking.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) reports that Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani are working on multiple fronts to try and bolster the squad, especially given the various injuries.

Yesterday the directors met Andrea D’Amico, the agent of Filippo Terracciano, and there is a possibility that the 20-year-old Verona defender will be the second reinforcement of January after Matteo Gabbia, who returned from Villarreal and landed yesterday in Milan.

Terracciano is admired because of his age, his potential, the fact he already played a season and a half in Serie A and can be useful in three roles, given he is a right-back who can play on the left or even in midfield.

The management see him as one of the best young Italians in the role, but Verona’s first demands will be in the order of €6-7m, Terracciano is obviously very interested in the move and Milan are reflecting. A curiosity: Antonio Terracciano, Filippo’s father, was Stefano Pioli’s teammate at Verona and Fiorenzuola.

Two defenders and a striker is the plan, meaning Terracciano is just a piece of the big picture of the winter market. Furlani and Moncada started it with a clear idea: sign two central defenders and, if possible, a striker.

Moncada is the soul of the market because the technical judgments are primarily his, and the focus is on Lilian Brassier of Brest. Jakub Kiwior has been and still would be the priority name but there is a problem: Arsenal have said no to a loan. It was a response regarding Takehiro Tomiyasu, too.

The priority in mid-December thus became Clément Lenglet, now at Aston Villa, who remains the ideal choice but again there are obstacles on the road given his salary and the fact that his loan from Barcelona must first be terminated.

Milan are evaluating various options and among the defenders followed is Brassier, who is valued at around €10-12m and has the added bonus of also being able to slot in at centre-back if needed.

Milan worked a lot on Serhou Guirassy, with his €17m clause not a problem, but he wants €5m net from his next club. With the Growth Decree that would have cost Milan €6.5m gross but without it the figure rises to €9.2m.

First Milan will work on the defender and perhaps on a midfielder, because Rade Krunic is officially out of the plans and the right offer is awaited, then a new striker might become something to explore, unless Luka Jovic keeps scoring like he has been.

  1. If Krunic gets sold outside of Italy, does that open up another non EU spot besides the spot that will be used for Matija Popovic?

  2. The club needs a striker no matter what Jovic does. Giroud gets injured, Jovic is 1st choice, who is the replacement if he gets injured as well?

    1. Nice one, of a truth apart from Jovic there’s no other striker again that can compete for goals and rotation is also needed for better results

    2. For the next 6 months (so, maybe a loan?), yes, but in the summer with Jovic rediscovering football and Colombo back, I’m not sure. We renew Giroud for a year and the strike force is Jovic/Colombo/Giroud. We will have Big Pop in the mix too.

With Gabbia back and Simic emerging we don’t need another CB, even if Kjaer is not renewed. Then I would still take Miranda to alternate with Theo even if we have Jimenez and Bartrsaghi (we can’t have all 18 year olds on the bench). So the only money we need to spend is on a DM. Assuming we’ll have around ~50m again, spend it ALL on a top DM and then focus on renewing Mike and Theo, keep giving the kids minutes and we’re all set.

      1. This!!! Exactly this!!! We don’t need to spend that much EXCEPT defensive mid.
A far punt maybe a cheap CB or short loan CB 🤷‍♂️ but that’s about it

  3. One additional midfield is needed because krunic is leaving the team this winter transfer and also incase any midfielder is injured, there can be a replacement

  4. A midfield krunic replacement then a striker we don’t need defence our defence is already stable our defence are doing a great work jemenez and simic are really great couple with Kjaer, thiaw tomori kalulu so we don’t need defence

  5. From what I see Filippo Terracciano could easily take the DM role. He started his career in midfield role and was later shifted to RB. But he’s still used as midfielder from time to time. He has good positioning and passing. And is quite a unit at 1,86m. Kind of reminds me of Busquets.

  6. We just need a DM

Kjaer, Simic, Pellegrino and Gabbia are enough CB’s until Feb when Thiaw and Kalulu return with Tomori back in March – Basta!

Full backs we have plenty especially with Bartesaghi and Jimenez doing well.

Strikers – I think we should wait until summer, let Jovic play consistently, we still have Giroud, Okafor and even Camarda that can share minutes

It’s midfield where we are lost
    Pobega – injured
    Krunic – leaving
    Musah,RLC and Reijnders – all Mezzala’s
Bennacer – Afcon and he is also better further forward
