GdS: How Milan could line up in 2024-25 if two major targets arrive

By Oliver Fisher -

While there are still a few months until the summer transfer window opens, La Gazzetta dello Sport have already begun to hypothesise how AC Milan might look heading into next season.

According to what is being reported by this morning’s edition of the paper, OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram is a name that the Milan management want to potentially complete the department.

Knowing that a centre-forward will also arrive – with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres and Bologna talent Joshua Zirkzee top of the list at the moment – La Gazzetta have taken a look at how Milan would line up if they got their main targets.

It starts with a familiar rearguard of Davide Calabria, Malick Thiaw, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez as the back four in front of Mike Maignan.

Thuram is placed in the midfield double pivot alongside Tijjani Reijnders, meaning they think that the 4-2-3-1 system will remain whether Stefano Pioli is the head coach or not.

Then, an attacking trident of Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Rafael Leao should support the new striker, which the newspaper have down as either Gyokeres or Thuram.

Of course predicting how a team might line up months before the start of the next season is difficult, but if Geoffrey Moncada and co. get things right then it might not be too far wrong.

  1. I feel like Højbjerg might be more interesting than Thuram.
I think Gabbia is better than Thiaw and should be starter ahead of him.
Not sure Maignan remains with us next season.
And finally as a bonus, perhaps try to use Pulisic as an AM and go for either Orsolini or Berardi as RW ?

    1. Definately I’d take Hojbjerg or Amrabat.

Start Gabbia and allow Thiaw to continue his development, he is still young and was stand out last year and yet people are writing him off. These are normal growing pains.

I like the idea of Pulisic as AM but not if Zirkzee arrives. Will also depend on what Chucky shows for the rest of the year..

It is good to have options and be able to adjust formation as needs be.
I do want to see Bennacer and Reijnders either side of a DM. I think they are both high class and need the chance to play in their best position

  2. K. Thuram and Moncada were together at Monaco.
Sell Bennacer, use the money to buy K. Thuram.
With 1 year left on his contract he should cost no more than 20-25 mil. Same money you should be able to get for Bennacer.
Sign Zirkzee for the striker position, and you will need another CB and a RB.
Top it all off with a new coach who will know how to use all these players properly.

    1. I would sell Maignan. I’d take Di Gregorio instead. I would take a new right back, maybe Sildilla from Freiburg. I would take a new central defender, Buongiorno from Torino and sell Kalulu. In midfield I would sell Pobega and get Wieffer from PSV, defensive midfielder exactly what we need, a player with leadership qualities and personality, reminds me of Van Bommel. And as a central striker I would go for Gimenez from Feyenoord or J.David from Lille. My opinion is that this way we would have a complete first line, balanced and with scudetto potential.

    2. Thuram likes to play LCM, and that’s where Reijnders plays, so if we sign Thuram, are we going to bench Reijnders?

  3. Leaving aside valuations on his worth, there’s no way that we’re paying 40 mill for Thuram or another midfielder. Even 30 mill considering the investments last year (Reijnders, Musah) would be overkill.

At most, we’ll get a young DM on loan (similar to operation for Vranckz) or buy someone for 20 mill or less.

That’s assuming that we’re selling one of the current midfielders

  4. We have been struggling to link up the defence and midfield since Kessie’s departure.

Why nobody is stressing out to sign a damn DM???

We have Musah, Adli, Tijjani, Cheek to play in central midfield and even Benny.

We can easily sign Amrabat for Thuram money.

Benny can’t cover DM alone and nobody was able to honestly.

Signing DM is way more important than signing CM now.

    1. I agree with you. Milan should sign a DM (& forward) as priority.

It’s obvious that Pioli wants 2 very mobile midfielders (not a DM) in the pivot. One being a playmaker, the other being a box to box type of player. Mobility, getting up to the attack and running back to cover D is critical.

Our best midfield was Tonali, Kessie, Bennie and Krunic. Today, midfield is our worst area.

Reijnders is nothing more than a pass merchant. Can’t play D, can’t attack. I have no idea why someone put him in next years lineup. He also struggled in his role in both a 433 and 4231 this year.

Adli and Musah are not DMs and are just average CMs at this time. At Milan, honestly, they should be backups based on their performances this season.

Pobega is also not a DM either and there are still doubts about his skill level and potential.

Bennie is still missing fitness but hopefully recovers back to top condition by next year.

        1. Eh. 1/3 of that “world class” midfield is sitting on a beach in Arabia collecting millions at age 27. He could have signed a contract extension with us or fought for his place at Barcelona. Zero ambition. Another 1/3 is a gambling addict serving an 8 month suspension and about to get suspended further. The remaining 1/3 spends 3 months on the injury table every other season. Last season, when we still had 2/3 of that “world class” midfield, we finished 5th. You need to break eggs to make an omelet. The only regret is not receiving any cash for Kessie’s departure.

    2. Agree, we should be looking at players like Thuram only if we have money left after signing a quality DM, we should try to get Florentino 45 mil, Jorginho free, Hojbjerg 20 mil, or Guido Rodrigues free

  5. If Thiaw is still our starting CB next season we are going to have problems. We need to sign a starting CB, a Striker and a DM. And then if we can a RB.

  6. Right backs owned by Milan

    Calabria
    Florenzi
    Kalulu
    Jimenez
    Salaemakers
    Bakoune

We can do fine with them, not a priority position imo

    1. He is a DM, but of dubious quality IMO. Milan have several players for 2 positions (Bennacer, Reijnders, Musah, Adli, Pobega) so before buying should sell.

      1. He’s a b2b. Lets be honest. Tho a moment graphics would go a long way in these articles they make up. Just formation is pointless, most teams don’t stay in a formation during gametime

  7. No benercer should be unsellable now as it stands if we sign kephrar thuram then let’s sell adli and pobega then we retain benercer, rejnder and musah to be honest musah has improved in all aspects as a central midfield. And now let’s Acmilan sign Ander Guller for the attacking midfield.

  8. Almost everyone here want to sell benna and replace him with kephren,no club want to buy bennacer now 40-50m euro , he is injury prone. . The only you can sell are adili or pobega but both only generate small funds . KT 40-50m euro price tag , if ACM buy KT then no budget to buy striker unless ACM sell maignan or theo ( disaster if sell theo ). Realistic DM that coming are piere emile hjol from spurs ( low cost option )

    1. Pretty sure Hjol from spurs has high salary requests and there are other teams from PL that would accept these requests.

Pobega can’t be sold after injury he had and is a home-grown so good for lists.

I doubt any of the CM-s will be sold unless Pioli (or the new coach veto-s them).

The reason people say Benna should leave is because he has plateaued in the past year, has had various injuries, has a high salary and every two years he misses a big chunk of important games due to Africa cup. Add to this the fact that he’s probably the one CM that can be sold for most money right now (25-30mill?), excluding Reijnders.

Personally I’d keep the midfield as it is and focus first and foremost on the Striker and then on the central defender if we don’t think that Thiaw and Kalulu will grow more.

By summer we’ll probably know if any of our undisputed starters will be sold and will need to be replaced.

      1. It’s 6M gross. What he has at sprus. That is not high. That is in fact less than Origi 4 example. And sure other Premier teams can offer a bit more but at Milan he will have chances for trophies and regular game time.

I think if Milan would to approach him we’d have a real chance to sign
