GdS: How Milan could exploit David’s qualities in new-look front three

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan seem ready to make a concrete attempt to sign Jonathan David from Lille, perhaps as early as the January window.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Milan made an attempt to sign David during the summer and they have not given up on the idea of signing the 23-year-old striker, who is under contract until June 2024.

That deadline has Lille caught in a dilemma because they either sell in advance of it to maximise their return or they risk keeping hold of a player who would then walk away for free. As a result, his asking price has dropped from €60m to €40m.

An approach will be made in January to see if there is the basis to negotiate, but if David were to arrive how would Stefano Pioli use him in his system?

David would obviously take over the role as starting centre-forward given Olivier Giroud (out of contract in June 2024 as things stand) is now 37 and Noah Okafor is viewed as more of a left winger.

It would give Pioli a front three – when adding in Rafael Leao on the left and Christian Pulisic on the right – that is fast, technical and fluid in transition.

They would have the ability to interchange positions and draw markers with their movement inside, and there would be a lot of link-up play between the three encouraged.

Moreover, Pioli would have three forwards who are all skilled in one-on-one situations, making the Rossoneri lethal when it comes to counter-attacking threat.

  1. I think David is the ‘barking up the wrong tree’ type of situation.
its so painfully obvious the media is linking him to Milan because of the supposed discount that comes from his contract.. When it comes to gameplay he does not fit Milan at all. Or italy in general.
40M for someone to take penalties? Bit much imo

    1. you do know leao scored 3 and gave 4 assist so far, right?
If he keeps this up he will have the same numbers as last season in goals and even more assists.
So idk where your sh!ty believes that 433 is not working comes from

  2. Zirkzee from Bologna seems like a good replacement for giroud. He can hold up the ball well, skillfull, young, links very well with his teammates and is quite fast. Plus, he already knows the league. A sure bet signing, imo.

    1. I agree that he could have been an interesting alternative to Jovic or Okafor if we’d brought him in this summer, but that ship has sailed – only signed for Bologna in summer on a long contract, all the power is with them.
