GdS: Milan need help in midfield with Kessie’s absence felt – the plan for the summer

One of the areas of AC Milan’s squad that needs the most work in view of the summer transfer window is the midfield, and a plan has been outlined.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Davide Frattesi of Sassuolo has emerged as a concrete target for Milan as they look for a way to cope with Ismael Bennacer’s absence and also raise the level of midfield depth.

The problem is that Frattesi – given that he is young, has impressed in Serie A and is Italian – has an asking price that could well reach €30m, and there are other clubs looking at him.

The department could lose two players but will certainly lose one. Tiemoue Bakayoko has had a disastrous second loan spell with the Rossoneri and he will therefore return to Chelsea, while Aster Vranckx arrived a year ago from Wolfsburg on loan a €12m option to buy, and it seems unlikely that he stays at the moment.

Tommaso Pobega and Rade Krunic have proven to be useful in various moments of the season. The Bosnian formed a triangle with Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer that worked very well against Napoli, but the balance has gone now the Algerian is out.

Moving to a 4-3-3 formation could be an option especially given that the likes of Frattesi, Pobega and Krunic are box-to-box players naturally, while Daichi Kamada (another target) can play that role.

The article mentions how Milan never really replaced Kessie in terms of physicality and size in shielding the defence, which is why Ruben Loftus-Cheek is on the list as a name who could bring some of that, as is his Chelsea team-mate Carney Chukwuemeka.
