GdS: Milan set to sign the ‘mini Messi’ Romero who got his break through a reality show

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan appear to be closing in on the signing of Luka Romero on a free transfer from Lazio, and more details begin to emerge about a relative unknown character.

La Gazzetta dello Sport write how Romero was a part of the show ‘Champions – The dream’ which was a reality programme about football with Christian Arrieta and Maradona Junior back in summer 2015.

In Palma de Mallorca on the Balearic Islands, Romero was aiming to establish his footballing career. He was born in Mexico to Argentinian parents but had been living in Spain for a while by then.

The broadcaster IB3, an independent channel on the island, decides to organize a reality show on football. They gathered 500 talented kids, sets up four auditions between Ibiza and Mallorca and called dozens of scouts.

The stands populated, the cameras scanned the field and young talents showed what they could do. Romero dribbled past everyone, passed the tests and bewitched one of the scouts, Gustavo Siviero.

He took off his sunglasses at the end of the session and started dialling phone numbers trying to get ahead of the others, stating: “I’ve found a talent.”

Fast forward to today, and after a couple of seasons with Lazio it seems certain that Romero will play at Stefano Pioli’s Milan. Last year he scored one goal in nine Serie A matches. He plays on the right wing, he’s left-footed and Lionel Scaloni – the Argentina World Cup winning boss – noticed this.

In 2022 he included him among the pre call-ups for the World Cup. Romero is the youngest debutant in LaLiga history and carries with him a cumbersome nickname – the ‘Mini-Messi’ – above all for his physique and attacking style.

Romero made his debut in 2019 and scored a couple of goals in six games. In 2015 he had signed with Mallorca, but even then half of Europe wanted him as revealed by Alejandro Saggese, the first coach to call up Luka with the Argentina U15 team.

In the last two years he has scored one goal in 21 games and has not had much playing time, but Milan could be the right club to relaunch his career.

  1. “He plays on the right wing, he’s left-footed and Lionel Scaloni – the Argentina World Cup winning boss – noticed this.” Lol

  2. Please Acmilan should sign Noah Okafor to assist leao rafeal then Lazar sardmardzic, chukwueze, and Morata or elye wahl to assist Geroud

  3. ‘Relaunch his career’

He hasn’t started his career. He will be lucky if he starts 5 league games for us this year.

  4. regardless of my dislinking of this ownership i actually like this transfer and thought of it as a possibility before due to his expiring contract and even when he arrived. The kid is a technical gifted player and can cover several positions so could be a valuable lomg term signing. He has some limitations due to his size but that can also be a force due to his low gravity, Great dribler and has speed and he is a fighter from what ive seen, Could be a smart move.

      1. Yes but a free transfer diaz for maybe a mil in compensation for lazio isnt too bad either in my book. He might do better or can get shipped out again.

    1. Yeah like JPH low cost but high gain if success. ACM only pay signing fee 5m euro . It is like we get brahim for just 5m euro . I always like low cost deal rather than expensive deal , AC Milan have bad luck if signing player with 30m euro above transfer fee

      1. Regardless if i like cardinale or not i will never oppose a cheap deal and this is a deal that easily could stiill offer some cash even if if he doesnt turn out wel with us as his value is likely to go up and if not then its a low cost risk.
not sure if that 5 mil sign on fee is nothing but a media rumors but obviosuy that would ramp up the overall price of the transfer and make it less favourable but lets see if that is actually correct.
Otherwise its a great possibility depending on wage and sign on fee.

        1. Yeah ACM lucky if with cheap deal . Bad on expensive deal like andre silva/rebic, bonucci/caldara,higuain,piatek,paqueta and the latest CDK . Even if romero failed to perform we can sell him back at 10m euro due to young age . If romero success he can seal RW starter position and we got starter player just pay signing fee 5m euro ,huge profit.

  5. “..for sure” is a pretty thin argument, he could come good and he is 18 years old and we will most likely have to fetch up with a small compensation in the vicinity of 500k-1mil and the players value is already higher than that, he might turn out good or he might not but we are most likely guaranteed a profit nevretheless if we were to sell him. Not a bad idea bringing him in but obviously not as a starter if we get a more ready plater like Chukwueze but romero can play in all positions in the front 3 and can be moulded into a player of of what we need,

    1. Yes how exciting it is to think what profit we could make on a player….(whilst the club makes losses).

If all you’re interested in is money then we’d be better off not playing this silly transfer market game because in the longer term we end up spending more – see the past 15 years at Milan.

      1. The past 15 years ACM never spend big anymore. After win CL in 2007 , all of squad just full of veteran , we buy ibra from juve ( relegated) and thiago silva from brazil club not that expensive. In 2011 after scudetto , ACM enter banter era & only depend on loan player / free transfer player. You support wrong team if expect ACM spend big .Did you even know berlusconi never buy player more than 45m euro , no FFP rule at that time and you can use owner money at that time

      2. Im just saying even if he doesnt succeed he could most likely be sold for a a profit, obviously i care more about success than cash BUT its a risk worth to take on romero,

    2. Yeah, Lazio would let him leave just like that and not offering him a contract if he was really a ‘mini Messi’. Keep it real guys, its a joke.

      1. Who the hell says its lazio who doesnt want to continue with him, besides of you and some other fans of course.
