GdS: The ‘T-factor’ to revamp the attack – Milan target Thuram and Taremi

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are looking to revamp the attack this summer and they want to improve the centre-forward department, given Olivier Giroud worked overtime last season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the ‘T-factor’ could ‘ignite’ the Rossoneri’s attack. The thoughts of the last few days have oscillated between Porto and Mönchengladbach, with the names of Marcus Thuram and Mehdi Taremi on the list

Thuram’s name is top of the pile, because his contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach is about to expire and he will leave the German club on a free transfer and his profile ticks a lot of boxes.

He already has good international experience in the Champions League and the Europa League, while the scouting department deem him to be a modern and quality centre-forward, good on the counter and in one-on-one situations.

He has a certain explosiveness, speed and flexibility, while he could also fill the role of winger if necessary, which Stefano Pioli wouldn’t mind. Either way, he offers something different.

Then there is Taremi, whose name is circulating as a potential deputy for Giroud. He is an experienced striker at 30 years of age and he has just had a season with 34 goals and 15 assists across his club and national team.

He has a contract expiring in 2024 which means the Iran international could represent an opportunity. In three seasons with Porto he has won a league title, three cups and two Portuguese Super Cups.

In the last Champions League he netted five times in games against Bayer Leverkusen, Club Brugge and Atletico Madrid. However, Porto have no intention of selling him off on the cheap, but several clubs like him and his future will be decided shortly.

Comparing the two, Taremi played 47 games for Porto, scoring 30 goals and adding 10 assists. Thuram played 32 matches, with 16 goals and 7 assists.

The Iranian is more clinical than the Frenchman in front of goal: for him the percentage conversion of big chances into goals is 54%, while the Frenchman is at 39%.

Another figure to consider refers to the presence in the area, in which the two are equal: for the Porto forward, the average number of touches in the penalty area is 6.38, slightly higher than that of Thuram (6.41).

    1. only if we are willing to fork up 30-40 mil because beto is a very important player for them as they get relegated without him. same goes for samardžić.
In the end i doubt any of the 2 targets will arrive either,

      1. Martin, I think you are wrong about his fee. His release clause is 35M, so that is the maximum they can get. But I am sure they would also accept 20M+10M in bonuses. Which for a striker like that is worth. I mean, better to give that money for him and pay him 3M a season than getting Scamacca for the same money and paying him double. We all know who is the better player of those 2 and is cheaper at the same time.

        1. i dont oppose the idea of beto as he could fit in well but if you say he has a 35 mil release clause i would expect that they want that sum due to his importance to the club but if a formular like you mentioned would entice then sure as the could do very well for us. I wouldnt mind scamacca as ive told before but i would bid either welcome with open arms.

  1. Oh ffs, talking about stats like constants, how do you factor in that one plays in France with different types of playing style, other in Portugal with another style of playing, and then they have to adapt in Italy?
    Bs.

    1. Yes but Taremi is good. Stats do matter, if you score 50% of big chances compared to our 30% wood striker, that is BIG. Doesn’t matter how many goals, but how many of the chances you convert.

      1. I know mate, but the related factor there are – how the defense/defensive tactics of the league, the defensive quality of opposition, etc. all are major factors beyond the 50% big chance conversion rates etc. etc. 50% conversion rate in French League, and 50% conversion rate in Italian league, and 50% conversion in English league will have vastly different interpretations – and one might argue that 80% conversion rate in Maltese league is equivalent to 5% conversion rate in Italian league etc.

    2. I don’t want to get into it in detail but you can account for differences in styles, region, type of players through either cluster analysis or multi level hierarchical models. But I’m getting ahead of myself.. the point is, is that it’s possible
      Cheers

  2. Thuram is a really interesting one.

His current goals to games record isn’t great but he has the potential to absolutely explode as he’s so physical that he could be unplayable.

If we could take the pressure off him for goals by having Leao, a RW and AM who can also score then it could really be something.
