GdS: Probable XIs for Udinese vs. Milan – Ibrahimovic to lead the line

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan take on Udinese tomorrow night at the Dacia Arena hoping to put two bad results in the league behind them and resume winning ways.

According to this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below), Stefano Pioli is expected to line up with the same rearguard as he has done in the last couple of games with Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori forming a three-man defence in front of Mike Maignan.

Alexis Saelemaekers and Theo Hernandez keep their places as the right and left wing-backs respectively in the 3-4-2-1 system, with Ismael Bennacer and Sandro Tonali reunited as the central midfield pairing.

Rafael Leao is expected to get the nod to start on the left side of the attack with Brahim Diaz on the opposite side and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who would be starting his first game since January 2020 – is tipped to lead the line.

Probable Milan XI (3-4-2-1): Maignan; Kalulu, Thiaw, Tomori; Saelemaekers, Bennacer, Tonali, Hernandez; Diaz, Leao; Ibrahimovic.

Probable Udinese XI (3-5-2): Silvestri; Becao, Bijol, Perez; Ehizibue, Pereyra, Walace, Lovric, Udogie; Success, Beto.

  1. This three at back formation is quite alright for Milan at the moment and if Pioli could just tweak it a little and allow R Leao to start from the left wing so instead of using 3421 he should just adjust the formation to 343 flat and balance both the back and the forward all at the same time,at least Brahim Diaz and CDK can function as wingers and if our manager can just do this I believe Milan will be formidable and sealing top4 will be a walk in the park and so will we surprise the world of football in this year’s Champions League. He should also try to rotate 3 to 4 of the outfield players every match and rotate the key players(Leao,Giroud,Hernandez,Bennacer and Tonali) after every 4 to 5 matches although not synchronically to keep them fresh and I make bold to say if this strategy is implemented AC Milan will be unstoppable for years to come.

    1. You are right. Leao performs better when he plays from the wing but I think Pioli is trying to create space in the centre by stretching opponent defence with Theo. Nonetheless, giving Leao freedom to interchange with Theo and move from to wing and centre will make us to be more unpredictable.

Theo has a powerful and accurate shot which will make him score if he moves more to centre and Leao on the flank will create space for other players in the centre.
