GdS: Referee favouritism is not to blame – the reason why Milan get so many penalties

By Oliver Fisher -

The media and fans of other teams have repeatedly pointed to the fact AC Milan have had more penalties than any other team this season.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport reports (via MilanNews), Milan have been awarded 14 penalties in Serie A – no team in the top five European leagues have had more. In Italy, there is much discussion about it which obviously comes with the accusations of refereeing favouritism, but the paper reports that all bar one have been completely justified.

The aggressive play of Stefano Pioli’s side is what brings so many players into the box. To this must be added the great speed of the Rossoneri players who put their opponents in difficulty and force them to make fouls.

Some penalties have been earned by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose presence in the area frightens everyone – as seen in the penalty Milan got against Bologna when Soumaoro handled the ball. Ibra’s physicality puts everyone in difficulty and so often the defenders cannot stop him without committing an offence.
