GdS: Thiaw suffers ankle sprain and could miss Lazio game – the latest

AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw is at risk of missing the game against Lazio at the weekend having suffered an ankle sprain, according to a report.

According to Luca Bianchin of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Thiaw is at risk for the game against Lazio on Saturday. It is ‘nothing to worry about’ and he will only be sidelined ‘for a couple of days’.

From there, his condition will be evaluated ‘between Thursday and Friday’ to determine whether he is fit enough to be called up, but Fikayo Tomori is expected to be partnered by Strahinja Pavlovic anyway.

It is still not the best news for the new head coach Paulo Fonseca who is searching for some defensive solidity and named Thiaw as a starter in the first league game of the season against Torino, but dropped him after an error-strewn display.

If the German were to miss the game then it would mean that the Rossoneri only have Matteo Gabbia as a back-up option, barring any call-ups from Milan Futuro or the potential use of Theo Hernandez/another full-back in a more central role.

Thiaw was out for two and a half months last season after he got injured in a Champions League group stage game against Borussia Dortmund, but thankfully this seems less serious.

    1. Even if he hasn’t played well I will take this more as a potential bad omen as we might actually end up with an as injury stricken squad as last season as we now already has 4 injuries after a bit over a month of training. 2 fairly long term injuries + one milder with Morata and who knows how long Thiaw now will be out.
This is not good also considering that we automatically will play more games in cl which will further put pressure on the squad.
There is still 9 months left of the season so sorry I can’t really see anything positive about this as all of our players needs to be available for us.

    2. You are not a Milan fan I believe that error he made in the opening game that doesn’t mean he is bad though, this is why I never wanted to be a defender because you defends the entire 90 minutes and one mistake from the additional minutes the fans started calling you names..
for a striker you will have rating of 3/10 but goal or assist you are the best for me the entire team played badly apart from Reijnder

  1. I’m sorry to hear that Thiaw is injured. It is not only regrettable regarding Thiaw himself, but it is also concerning that we have already four injured players, so early in the season.

On the other hand, I believe that Thiaw should be sold. I think he is gaffe-prone and costs us points. It’s been a fairly regular occurrence, now, that he makes crucial mistakes that result in goals or man-advantage conceded to the opponents. Someone here has said that his one mistake in the Torino game should not define his worth as a player. Sure, but then, maybe that person hasn’t watched Thiaw before, because it wasn’t just the Torino mistake. He very regularly makes this kind of mistake. Silly PKs conceded, silly tactical fouls that get him expelled, own goal, various other defensive failures. Yes, one mistake is not determinant, but a long series of several mistakes, is.

So, while knowing of an injury is never good, I frankly don’t think that his absence is likely to hurt Milan. I think that as long as Pavlovic is healthy, Thiaw’s absence won’t be felt, given that Pavlovic is a far superior center back than Thiaw.

I have trouble understanding why the focus was on shipping out Kalulu and not Thiaw, when I believe that Kalulu is also much better than Thiaw. Oh well, Newcastle was briefly interested and then there were no takers. But then, it was said that Kalulu was not in Fonseca’s plans and he was practically forced out. I would have preferred to hear that Thiaw was not in Fonseca’s plans. This would encourage his agent to pitch him to several other clubs; maybe another club would then step up and sign him.

The same can be said of shipping out Colombo while keeping Jovic. I believe that Colombo is a better striker than Jovic; also, Colombo would have helped with the European lists, given that he is Italian while Jovic is a foreigner. We currently have too many foreigners; we can’t register them all, so, why not keep Colombo whom we can register, instead of keeping Jovic???

Sometimes it is very hard to understand certain decisions; these two (Kalulu/Thiaw; Colombo/Jovic) have especially puzzled me.

    1. Exactly, makes no sense, who makes these stupid decisions ?? Colombo already scoring and playing well, Jovic a ghost ??!! Baffling…..

  2. As far as I’m concerned, we only have 3 cb: Plahovic, Tomori and Gabbia. Kalulu was a better choice of remaining than Thiaw.
I just hope Kalulu improves with Juventus and our project becomes enticing enough for him to come back next season.
I don’t see much hope from Thiaw in Milan (but I hope he proves me wrong).
