Inzaghi admits Milan ‘deserved the win’ as Inter are left ‘bitter’

Following his side’s loss to AC Milan, Inter manager Simone Inzaghi spoke to the media, and his words were very complimentary towards the Rossoneri.

Inzaghi is often named alongside the very best managers in the world at the moment, but he was tactically beaten by Paulo Fonseca on Sunday night. The Portuguese manager set up his side in a brave shape, that looked to squeeze Inter heavily.

A front four, consisting of Tammy Abraham, Alvaro Morata, Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic, constantly looked to pressure the defensive line of the opposition, but if the Nerazzurri broke the press, there were rarely many gaps due to the compactness of Milan’s side.

It is the first time in 250 days that the Diavolo can say they are champions of the derby, and now they will look to continue improving after taking a golden opportunity to restart the season.

Inzaghi spoke post-match to DAZN and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“AC Milan are a very good team, tonight they did better than us and deserved the win. We approached it badly, we were not a good team. Something that rarely happens to us. I tried to change it, but the situation didn’t change: we were not very compact, losing the distance. We did better in the last 25 minutes of the first half but in the second half we came back like in the first, the two halves that my team approached badly were decisive.”

Can you explain what it was down to?

“I have to review the match, we were not lucid because we chose badly and the two goals conceded are the testimony. The first two occasions Milan went in front of the goal. We should have done more, we are bitter because it was a derby. We have to work, tonight we weren’t the team we’ve been for three years now.”

Did you concede two avoidable goals?

“We knew that Gabbia was skilled in the aerial game, the feeling is that we were a bit empty-headed. Defeats sting, we will try to work harder and take something positive from a defeat that stings.”

Did you try to shake things up with the changes?

“Absolutely, we approached the second half badly. Barella had a little problem, the feeling we gave was that we were not a team. This defeat will be the object of analysis to understand where we went wrong, me first. I’m sorry because I saw the guys well, we had worked well but the approach was not good.”
