Journalist claims Austrian coach has been in talks with Milan and wants job

By Ben Dixon -

There are many questions surrounding AC Milan, but most of them link back to two topics. Firstly, about the future of Stefano Pioli and following that, who will be his successor?

There have been continued links to Italian coaches Antonio Conte, Thiago Motta, and Raffaele Palladino, to name a few. However, today, there have been claims that Milan are not solely interested in Italian coaches.

Independent journalist Ronald Morgan has reported that the Rossoneri have been in talks with the Austrian coach, Oliver Glasner, for ‘a while’, and he would be very keen to take the team.

The Austrian had a 19-year-long playing career, never leaving his native country throughout, though, when it came to management, after managerial jobs at two of his former clubs, SV Ried and LASK (where he earned qualification to Europe twice), he moved to Germany and took a job at VfL Wolfsburg.

In his first season, he led the club to a seventh-place finish, earning Europa League football. Following this, in his second season, he took the club to the Champions League through a fourth-placed finish.

He will be most known for his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, though. During his first season, the club were in the process of a massive overhaul, yet he still won the Europa League, beating West Ham United and Barcelona in the process.

In his last season at the club, he took the side to the Round of 16 in the Champions League after finishing second in a group with Sporting Lisbon, Marseille and Tottenham Hotspur. He also lead them to the DFB Pokal final.

The most important detail is this – he is currently a free agent, which means should Milan decide to part with Pioli before the end of the season, he would be able to take over immediately, with no need to pay any compensation.

  1. Didn’t he run 3421 at Frankfurt?
If he only knows 3 men defense, than the answer is a NO.
He undoubtedly has had a successful coaching career though so far.

    1. He is an interesting choice to be honest. I can’t say it will definitely be a success as he is yet to manage a big 4 club, but could be a worth looking at.

  2. It looks like he had Wolfsburg playing 4231, he went with 3421 at Eintracht because the previous coach had that system and the players were more suited for 343, 3421.
    Flexible and adaptable coach.

  3. I would love for a coach to come in and re-shape Leao into a Striker. This way we could play a 3-5-2 which is what a top 4 team should be able to do.

    1. Not another god damn Rangnick?! We’ve literally never had a Rangnick. We were about to have a Rangnick but that plan was scrapped in favor of Pioli.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind AC Milan under a Rangnick at this point. Italian football needs a shake up from a foreign coach without fear 🔥

  4. I hope this is true. Glasner is a good coach and better than Pioli. This would be an upgrade and we would be to still get something out of this season including a Europa League trophy instead of suffering with Pioli.

I hope this comes true. Eintract Frankfurt was a team under him and Kamada was a beast under Glasner leadership.

  5. He’s perfect for Cardinale…. he’s free, used to finishing 4th in the league, could maybe win the europa league or a coppa italia here and there. Exactly what we need to show our assets to the world and selling high what we bought low (when they flopped at Chelsea.)

What else can we want from Redbirds farmer team?
