Journalist ‘surprised’ Milan-linked Chelsea striker has renewed but believes ‘he will leave’

Olivier Giroud could still leave Chelsea this summer despite the fact he has had an extension of his contract triggered, a report claims.

A number of sources have reported over the last week that Giroud is close to Milan, as Calciomercato.com stated this morning that his arrival is becoming increasingly probable. They even added that Chelsea have decided not to stick with the ex-Arsenal man and that Milan have found an agreement principle over a two-year deal at about €4m net per season and Giroud himself is house shopping in Italy.

Chelsea’s official website however confirmed the Frenchman has now extended his contract until 2022. The 34-year-old’s current deal was due to expire at the end of this campaign but the extension means his three-and-a-half-year stay in west London continues for another year.

Goal journalist Nizaar Kinsella commented on the development via his Twitter profile and revealed his shock at the news, but also his feeling that Giroud could still leave.

“An extra year for Giroud. I am surprised at that but I still suspect he will leave but with Chelsea getting a fee. Olivier Giroud knows that it is very unlikely he will be a starter next season for Chelsea so it is a situation to watch develop,” he said.
