Kalulu discusses growth at Milan, necessary improvements and what Maldini meant

By Oliver Fisher -

Pierre Kalulu has insisted that he has grown a lot at AC Milan but can grow even further, and touched on his relationship with Paolo Maldini.

Kalulu is currently away with the French U21 national team for the European Championships that will take place over the next few weeks and hopes it will mark another key step in his so far exponential development as a player.

This morning Rivista Undici published an interview with the defender about his passion for fashion and his time at Milan so far, starting with his emotions after the 3-0 win against Sassuolo last year to secure the Scudetto.

“To be honest we weren’t scared before the Sassuolo game. There was a bit of that usual adrenaline, the one you get before every game, but we knew we worked well during the week and throughout the season and we were calm. There was no more tension than usual,” he said (via MilanNews).

The Milan world was rocked recently by the news that Paolo Maldini was sacked from his role as technical director, and Kalulu discussed the relationship he had with him.

“Maldini has helped me more to understand how much football matters in Italy. The fans are crazy, people really love you. When we went away, he was always the most acclaimed, even if he stopped playing more from ten years ago.”

On his arrival in Italy, he added: “When I arrived at Milan, not only had I never played as a professional, but I hadn’t played football for a long time either, because there was the pandemic.

“I hadn’t been on the pitch since March. I didn’t think pressure or the fact that I was paid little. I just said: I can finally go back to playing football. I’ve grown in everything. I’m stronger, faster, more free-headed, things come more naturally to me.”

On what can improve further: “In everything! I can be even more decisive, especially in aerial duels, and I can always read the games better. This makes the difference at a high level.”

On his favoured position: “To be perfect, you have to know how to play everywhere. It helps you a lot: if you want to be a regular at a big club, you have to be able to help the team where they need it.

“You have to be aggressive both in attack and in defence, you have to have the will to command the game and not suffer from it. I really like this type of football.”

  1. Goodbye Kalulu. You did great especially in our run to the Scudetto. I’ll.always be a fan. Imo you just need to work on your concentration again and you’d be just as good as in the Scudetto run. Don’t blame you for taking the bag besides with the money offered to the club…..oh wait, never mind… We haven’t sold you yet.
