It was two minutes before the break Milan got the lead that their counter-attacks had threatened on the night, and it was all thanks to Leao. The Portuguese winger set off on a run from his own half and ended up taking the ball beyond three players, outpacing Rrahmani to the byline and cutting the ball back to Giroud who made no mistake.

That ended up being the goal that won the tie as Victor Osimhen’s late leveller on the night made it 1-2 on aggregate and set up a potentially nervy last minute, but in the end it would prove to be the final chance of the game.

Leao spoke to Mediaset Infinity after the game to analyse what was a night with many emotions and all of them happy ones as soon as the referee blew for full-time, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Was the assist for Giroud like Van Basten’s goal against Napoli?

“It’s the same. I know I can make the difference. If I can’t score there are my team-mates.”

Could you be what Gullit was for Milan?

“I’m happy to be here. I’m proud to defend this shirt. There are no words for those who work with me. Last year I had a good season in the league and I wanted to show it again this year in the Champions League.”

Can you take penalties?

“I’m learning.”

How do you see your future story?

“I want to keep dreaming, higher up, like all the players at Milan we want to win the Champions League and we’re one step away. We have to try until the end.”
