Lega Serie A CEO De Siervo doubles down on Milan-Como in Australia: “Small sacrifice”

It seems that, despite suggestions otherwise, Lega Serie A are continuing to push for AC Milan to play Como in Australia.

There has been a lot said about the possibility of Milan playing down under, and very little of it has been good. The idea, in fairness, is not terrible, but the way of doing so is considered crazy by many, considering other shortfalls.

Taking the league to Australia is being done to boost Serie A’s profile, which is needed, admittedly. However, boosting its profile via broadcasting would be a big – and more importantly, welcomed – step.

Not stepping back

A decision has not been made one way or the other just yet, but the reported green light from the AFC signalled that it may be closer than what was initially imagined. We must wait to see what will happen next, but it seems the league remain hopeful.

Luigi De Siervo, the CEO of the league, spoke at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan, via Calciomercato.com.

“Milan-Como in Perth? We hope so; we’ve been working towards this. It’s an innovative project; many have understood it, many others haven’t. Right now, the authorisation process is being completed, but the final step is missing: FIFA’s authorisation.

“Discussions are ongoing. It’s a small sacrifice by Italian fans for a great result in the medium to long term.”

  1. The fact that milan are challenging for the scudetto and Como are challenging for European spots it’s even more reason not to go to Australia. How is it fair that all that traveling and time zone change effects these teams? Go try it on lower level teams in the last ague first and see if it’s a success or not. If I was milan I’d be protesting the idea, especially that you lose your home game.

    1. Yeah if we end up losing the match and then the following one ending up in problems once more against Pisa and it turns out decisive in the scudetto fight then I personally gladly will pay good money to see the initial outroar and eventual lynching of those responsible for this potential idiotic decision.
Regardless of how it goes though then I will always strongly oppose this marketing scheme regardless whether its Serie A or for that matter any other league. I still have some hope though that FIFA or UEFA will step in and bring it to a permanent halt.

  2. This whole thing is an example of blind leading the stupid. He has no concern for the players or fans. Even if players travel first class – it’s goddamn 18 hours in a plane – at least.

      1. Find a better paid job and you’ll fly first class as well. No need to hide behind your cinicism, jelaousy and contempt. The fact they are flying first class and you are not, is your own fault.
