‘We’ve just made history’ – Camarda reacts after scooping award in Italy U17 triumph

Francesco Camarda has spoken out about a ‘very emotional’ night after Italy’s U17 side won the European Championship in Cyprus.

Camarda scored twice in the final against Portugal last night as Italy won the U17 Euros for the first time in their history. It concludes a very memorable season for the striker, who in November become the youngest ever Serie A player aged 15 years and 260 days.

Having scored twice in the group stages against Slovakia and Sweden and having converted the winning penalty in the shoot-out against England in the quarter-finals, the 16-year-old saved his best for the last game.

He netted an excellent brace as Italy beat Portugal 3-0 in Limassol, and now there are widespread reports claiming that he will sign a new long-term deal with Milan in the coming weeks too.

Camarda spoke to UEFA after the full-time whistle and he tried to put into words what it means for the young Azzurri to have made history.

What does it mean to have won the tournament?

“It’s a very significant night, especially for the Italian Federation, because we’ve just made history. Italy had never won a U17 EURO until now and that is a great source of satisfaction. Winning in these colours, while representing our country, is a great emotion.”

And you are the Player of the Tournament…

“It is very emotional for me. I’d like to dedicate it to my parents, my family, all the people who love me, not to mention my team – I would’ve never won it if it wasn’t for them. This team is everything, we’re a great group, we’re like family and it shows on the pitch.”

Italy coach Massimiliano Favo was also asked about Camarda…

“Camarda is a well-known player because he has already played in Serie A. He scores and works for the team. In this team there are many good players, who I hope can write the history of the Champions League in the future.”
