Mike Maignan has admitted that he demands a lot of himself and others, which is part and parcel of being AC Milan captain.

A few months ago it seemed like Maignan was heading for a near-certain exit, given that his contract was expiring and he was reportedly at odds with the management. However, the announcement of his new deal until 2031 came earlier this year, amid the Frenchman returning to his best form.
It seems that the role of Massimiliano Allegri and the goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi was crucial in getting Maignan to U-turn, and the fact that Milan appear to be in a much better place than this time one year ago certainly helps.
Either way, ‘Magic Mike’ has pledged his future to the club, and he wears the armband too. Maignan spoke to the official Serie A YouTube channel in an interview published on the eve of the game against Napoli, and his words have been relayed by Calciomercato.com.
What is it like being a goalkeeper?
“We’re always alone. You have to have a pretty mean and strong mentality to be a goalkeeper. Not just crazy, just a little bit (laughs).”
What mantras do you follow?
“Faith, discipline, hard work, patience, and humility. These are very important words to me. Discipline in work, in never giving up in the face of storms. Humility because you must never forget where you come from and the sacrifices you made to get here.”
How would you reflect on your journey to this point?
“My journey wasn’t easy, but at home they did everything they could to give me the best. My mother worked hard: we were five siblings in one room. You can’t think about these things, these memories don’t fade even if you grow up, reach the top, and win.
“They’re memories to cherish, without playing the victim, but facing situations with determination. From a boy, I became a man, and I repaid her, in part, for the sacrifices she made. I think she’s happy with me.”
What is your personality like?
“I’m very demanding of myself and others, sometimes even too much. That’s why I have to be patient and understand that we’re not all the same. I have to set an example and be the best I can be, because being captain is a source of pride but also a responsibility.
“You must never give up and be an example to everyone. Within the team, we always give our all, even when the results aren’t there. You know: Rome wasn’t built in a day; you need to be patient and believe in your work. It will pay off in the end.”
