GdS: The ‘marathon’ begins – Milan could play 29 times in next four months

The mid-season period is always difficult for clubs and players, and the 2024/25 run-in is no different. It could see AC Milan play almost 30 times in four months.

Over the next few months, the Milan squad will be put to the test by the footballing calendar, and Paulo Fonseca must rotate his squad properly to ensure that there are no casualties to the calendar. At one point, he was criticised for his rotations, or lack thereof, and this trend cannot continue.

Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News) reports that in the next four months, Milan could play up to 29 times. Of course, this will depend on the progression in the Champions League and the Supercoppa Italiana, and with the Rossoneri hoping to finish within the top eight, it should be expected that more games in Europe are on the way.

Thankfully, the Diavolo are not alone in their struggles. Inter, Juventus, Atalanta and Bologna will also play a similar amount of games – less so Bologna albeit marginally.

The big problem is that Napoli could play 10 games fewer than the teams surrounding them, a huge benefit for Antonio Conte and perhaps, a benefit that will bring points just by itself. It will, of course, not be an excuse for any more shortcomings for Milan, though.

  1. Right, but each game they’re only kicking a ball around for an hour or so… I think next season we should add at least one more competition, some more internationals and hit 50 games in 3 months.

  2. Fonseca lost too much points already.

Compared to Pioli, Fonseca hold 7h position, Pioli finished second last year, team conceded the same amount goals per game like last year, so there is no improvement bringing new coach. On contrary opposite happened.

If this team doesn’t start to collect points now, you can say goodbye from European games next year.

  3. Maybe one day clubs will start rotating more. Until then they’ll keep on whining while playing the same 14 players not counting the gk

    1. Exactomondo, this is is so true, that’s why you have a squad so other fringe players can get enough game time to make a mark in a way. But you think is all about the first team, injuries, suspension, fatigue, personal leave excuses among others. I say they are not playing enough games
