Mazzara: Milan squad left ‘alone’ while ownership prioritise accounts over winning

Whilst AC Milan returned to winning ways this weekend, there have been questions asked about the management, and their priorities after radio silence at Milanello.

During the international break, it was reported that the squad would have an intervention with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, this did not happen. Instead, the Swede was not seen at Milanello all week, and questions have once again been asked about his priorities.

Today, they are not just being directed at Ibra, but rather the management as a whole, with Pietro Mazzara stating that the squad is ‘alone’ currently, in an editorial for Milan News. In fact, the club is now ‘a company’ with accounts being prioritised over sporting performances.

Whilst the numbers off the pitch are good, there are continued questions about the numbers on the field, and the numbers being invested to make the point tally greater, with Milan failing to properly contend for the Scudetto for two successive seasons.

At present, Paulo Fonseca faces the challenges of the situation alone, with Ibrahimovic failing to be a regular presence, and this leads to questions about the former striker’s role. If he is to be an advisor to the football club, he must be more regularly present otherwise his importance and authority risks falling.

Mazzarra also states that there is a feeling that the players are seen as employees in an area the club depends on, rather than being a primary asset, which is concerning.

  1. That’s the most accurate description…

Frendrup, Ricci will cost you 50M, which with even Bennacer and RLC sales, Gerry will still refuse to do anything for the team and just give empty promises to then switch to b*tching about that he will have the last laugh…

    1. Hobjberg is highly praised in France for his performances since the beginning of the season. He even scored yesterday. Marseille has already decided to activate the buying clause, for 13,5M. Less than Emerson Royal. So many missed opportunities that seemed like obvious upgrades. Ricci will never arrive, Milan isn’t ambitious and doesn’t pay much. He’ll end up playing for a rival like Thuram or Buongiorno.

  2. That’s the feeling I have to. The executives are taking care of the brand and business full time and sometimes they have a look at the team to see if it’s still cruising. As long as it’s not sinking, that’s fine. When the only people with football bonds are Moncada the video scout, Fonseca the cheap coach and Zlatan the clown, that’s a big statement that “soccer” is not the priority.

    1. Ha ha, true,. Milan need more than just a video scout. Problem is that management trying to build a winning team with extreme mediocre mentality.

  3. But… But… The stadium… And… And…

How dare you say something like that about Gerry and the Turds? You want bantera era on the verge of bankrupcy back? Is that what you want? Go cheer for Inter then you fake fan!

  4. Milan will never be really successful with 3rd tier management. This is management on the level of relegation clubs. How can Juventus get Giuntioli from Napoli or Inter developed Ausilio to be the sporting director all those years ago? We get a former player and put him there with 0 knowledge. Also a former banker and a scout. This is the management to get Milan to the top?

I don’t care about players but get proper people to run the club. Gazidis was a Ferrari for all of these people.

I don’t think they are prioritizing anything but they don’t have the capacity to handle everything properly at the same time.

  5. That’s the biggest thing we missed since Maldini’s departure. As a sporting director, his resume had both hot and cold with players like Giroud, Kjaer, Leao, Theo and Ibrahimovic and also players like Origi, Ballo-Touré, and failure to renew or sell Hakan, Donnaruma and Kessié, but as a man he was available, spoke to the players and the coach, motivated the squad, didn’t allow room for bad behaivour and you feel like during his era, the players played for the team.
Right now the management feels like a bunch of corporates. They might have a plan, but the human presence, necessary to tighten the squad, is absent.
They hired a new coach, yet no one is helping him. He had to establish the hierarchy, sanction players and deal with rebellious elements on his own. If the squad manages to be a unit this season, it will be his achievment alone.
Also, transfer window sometimes tell the already present players about the ambition of the club, and I don’t know what it does say when we get players like Emerson Royal. It’s not even like we lacked money (w spent 200M€ over 2 windows) and sometimes better players were actually cheaper than the ones we got (Hjulmand was sold for 20M€ in august 2023, Hojbjerg for 14M€ at the end of this season and Scamaccca was sold for 25M€ in august 2023). Actually outside of Pulisic and perhaps Morata and maybe Fofana, I don’t think we got any high quality player.

    1. I don’t think it’s fair to say that it’s Maldini’s fault to lose Calhanoglu, Donnarumma and Kessié. It was obviously for financial reasons and Maldini didn’t have any flexibility. Sell Kessié and there is no Scudetto. I would take the Scudetto any day over a transfer fee, especially since the money has been reinvested on cheap average recruits with low salaries.

He had something more as a sporting director, class, leadership, values. And something that is lacking right now, the ambition to have Milan back at the top of European football. He just couldn’t win against the bankers.

      1. Had he lost just one of them for free, it would have been acceptable, but he lost ALL 3 with no gain for us. That’s a lot in just 2 years. We were able to spend 200M€ on average players because we were able to sell players (Tonali for 70M€, CDK for 22M€), otherwise we would still have around 30-50M€ each summer.
I agree with the second paragraph.

  6. We don’t need ibra there. Guys need to learn to swim on their own. And leaders should step up from our sorry ranks in the team. Mike is obviously the undisputed leader. I’m also eyeing Morata and Fofana for it. Maybe theo if he gets his head out his aśs (doubtful)
