Mediaset: Milan to go all-in for €12m man after Buongiorno blow

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan’s chase for their primary defensive target seems to be over, and as a result, a journalist has claimed that they will now go ‘all in’ for another of their targets.

With Urbano Cairo making a January move for Alessandro Buongiorno near impossible, Milan will have to turn to other options, at least for the time being, with a future move not out of the question, given the Italian defender did not turn the club down.

As a result, the Rossoneri will now pursue different avenues for a central defender, with Stefano Pioli confirming that the club is looking to add another defender to the roster in his pre-match interview.

“Yes, yes, the choices we want to make in this market won’t change: the club is working. There are still two weeks.”

It is understandable why reinforcements are needed, though. Reports suggest that Pioli will be without three central defenders for some time.

Malick Thiaw will not return until the end of February, Fikayo Tomori will return shortly after, but Pierre Kalulu will be absent for at least another month, with a return in late March possible but unlikely.

SportsMediaset journalist Claudio Raimondi spoke about the chances of a defensive arrival and who they may target, and MilanNews relayed his words.

Who are you expecting the new defender to be?

“Milan’s defender will not be Buongiorno. Cairo won’t sell him, but it could be a future operation. Milan, therefore, will go all in for Brassier, with Brest resisting and still asking for 12 million euros for the French centre-back.

“Milan, however, hopes that time will play in their favour and that there could be a discount that would allow them to close the deal at around €8 million.”

  1. That’s short-sighted. If you really like and believe in Buongiorno, you need to hold out for him in the summer instead of having to make a stop gap signing…

Thiaw and Tomori are due back next month. We can’t hold out until then with Kjaer, Gabbia and Theo at CB when needed?

    1. Terracciano, Simic too. I don’t know anything about brassier, if he’s good or what not but we surely can hold off on signing someone out of desperation and wait until summer to land a guy that would instantly be a starter. This summer we would only need a couple of signings. A star striker very good center back and a holding midfielder

      1. Completely agree. The defensive crisis was last month as we had UCL group matches and fixture congestion while being forced to play Theo out of position.

Now we are a month away of getting 2 more fit CBs after just welcoming back Gabbia from loan, Kjaer, Pellegrino from injury and seeing Simic step up from primavera who performed admirably.

Sure it’s not ideal missing first choice pairing Thiaw and Tomori but surely with the existing personnel we can hold out for another handful of matches.

Unless this guy Brassier is the real deal, 1st XI starter material? I don’t know much about him but from what I’ve read and from other comments online this doesn’t seem to be the case.

        1. And how long would it take for him to get familiar with Serie A? 6 months? Then it would be already too late. Even two months is too long as the injured CBs are making their comebacks then.

So… Is it really necessary or even wise to splash out 12M€ on a CB now? No. No it isn’t.

  2. Cairo also said he’d sell Bremer for no less than 70 mil, but look how it went. Moreover he’s sold to their fierce (city) rival. It’s all about the art of negotiation and ‘politic’. Just do what Juve always do. Keep chasing and flirting with the targeted players until their performance on field is affected (in a bad way that is). And finally the club will have no other choice then to sell the player.

  3. This is moneyball guys, it’s a scattergun policy, you base signings on financial parameters rather than what you want/need. You end up making up traps as to why you really wanted that unheard of poster from Far away….How many unheard of CBs must we buy before we spend half the amount we spent in them on the own we really wanted and could have for for 30m…

If we can’t afford Buongiorno now, we will be 12m further away from him in the summer

    1. Yeah, i guess that management prepare the defensive line for summer business, kjaer will leave, tomori, kalulu, or theo will be sold? Bartesaghi or simic will be loaned out?

  4. No need more defenders, Tomori & Kalulu will play soon. Now we have Gabbia, Kjaer, Simic, Theo, Calabria, Terraciano, Florenzi, Bartesaghi. 8 can play now, 10 soon, and 11 can play at the end Feb 24.
