GdS: Milan attack in ’emergency’ – only four forwards definitely available vs. Genoa

AC Milan’s injury problems got worse last night as they lost two players during the space of just a few minutes in the win over Red Star.

Just after the midway point in the first half, Ruben Loftus-Cheek pulled up with some muscle discomfort and was forced off. Almost immediately after that Alvaro Morata tumbled in a challenge and landed awkwardly, also being substituted.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below), Loftus-Cheek has hurt his right adductor while Morata is struggling with a muscular problem in his left flexor. Their two injuries add to those of Luka Jovic and Christian Pulisic, so there is now an ’emergency’ in attack.

Paulo Fonseca hopes to have Noah Okafor back for Sunday against Genoa, who was unavailable yesterday due to some lower back pain that has been troubling him. However, his availability is not yet a certainty and thus the numbers look depleted.

The Portuguese coach will be able to count on Tammy Abraham – who scored the winner last night – and Francesco Camarda in the role of centre forward. Samuel Chukwueze and Rafael Leao will be the only wingers, then there are wild cards like Yunus Musah and Mattia Liberali for the No.10 role.

  1. blessing in disguise ? Situations like this is what forced Pioli to trust Gabbia, Kalulu, Thiaw etc. I’d say time to give Camarda some minutes (as a sub to Tammy), Perhaps Liberali or Zeroli too.
He needs to keep Musah on the double pivot and ORDER him to just pass the ball. The kid has the energy, can defend, understand the role but damn he takes the ball and starts to dribble. Just pass the ball, let the grown ups (Reijnders, Leao, Puli) dribble. IF he can do that he’d be an amazing sub for Fofana

    1. That’s the problem with Mussah, he doesn’t understand the role. Instill remember his interview when he said something like “…it wasn’t clear whether I should press or hold back.” That’s one of the first things you need to understand as a DM

  2. The fact we have no backup wingers at the moment is extremely concerning. The silver lining might be that Fonseca will be forced to use Musah in midfield, not as an RW in the next match. Liberali and Zeroli need call ups, maybe even Chaka Traore, who could be used as a backup for Leao.
