Ismael Bennacer took an important step forward in his recovery on Wednesday, but the AC Milan management are still planning a midfield signing.

This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) report that yesterday was an important day for Bennacer who returned to training at Milanello. The Algerian, who underwent surgery in mid-September after a severe calf injury, returned to the training ground for some individual work.

Before deciding whether to make a January investment on a midfielder, the management want to carefully evaluate how Bennacer’s return to the field goes. Milan are confident that the player can return to high levels, but this is the second serious injury in recent years.

Not only that but there can be no rushing him back into the fold. Although he is back in training, some estimates are talking about mid-January being the earliest we will actually see him taking part in a competitive game.

The directors have already identified a potential target in January to reinforce the midfield: it is Morten Frendrup of Genoa, who is currently the most appreciated profile and has Serie A experience.

The 23-year-old Dane is seen as an ideal man to complement the other pieces given that he ranks high in tackles and recoveries, while the sale of Luka Jovic or Noah Okafor could fund the move.

  1. Eden Hazard and Neymar are ATG tier level of players and even they were shadows of their former selves when they started getting injured almost once every 3 games played. They were not just among the best players in the world in their respective primes, they were among the best players in history in their respective positions and yet look how injuries have transformed them.
Bennacer has barely played a game in the beginning of this season and yet he was back to the nursery for monthes. Last season he was back in january and it took till may to play a bit well and it was against low level teams. We can never be sure but it’s safe or safer to assume that Bennacer is down for and that is probably yet another injury in the making. I think it would be wiser to try to sell him asap and get Frendup or Ricci this winter.
And that is coming from someone who is a huge Bennacer fan and loved him back in 2020-22

    1. Love love love me some Benny but I’d have to agree here. I don’t think he’s the same player anymore. Not that he might not get back to his previous best but it seems everytime he recovers he gets a relapse. And that ain’t benefitting anyone. Plus at Milan he has to play high level football at all times making it even worse for him to make a quiet recovery. My heart doesn’t want to write him off but the brain is saying we need to do what’s best for the team too.

  2. It seems to me we still need another midfielder.
I truly hope Benny can find form and fitness but it will take time.

If we play a double Pivot in midfield and a AM we have Fofana, Benny and perhaps Musah as Reijnders prob be further forward so we are short a player.

If we play 3 in midfield Reijnders, Benny, Musah and RLC can play Mezzala but we still need back up for Fofana

  3. Please for the love of god, get Frendrup and keep Bennacer and start playing 433 what this team was build for:

    —————————Maignan———————–
    Cala—-Gabbia/Tomori—Thiaw/Pavlo—-Theo
    ———————–Frendrup/Benn——————
    Fofana/Musah—————————-Tijji/Zeroli
    Pulisic/Chuk——Morata/Abe—–Leao/Okafor

    1. Benny will stay until summer… my wish is to sell RLC, Florenzi, Origi, Jovic and loan Jimenez. Since our UCL pass is guaranteed at this point, we should have the money for 2-3 signings… Frendrup, Fagioli and Parisi would make a huge difference

In the summer Benny replaced by Ricci (I hope him being Tonali and Pirlo fanboy will help us, plus contract until 2026) and depending on how Calabria’s season goes an RB would be key as well.

Tomori is also under microscope, but I think it’s more the media talk than the reality. And of course Abraham, will he get back to him S1 at Roma form?

  4. No is better we sign Warren Bondo for our line up he has the space, piece and method of playing Acmilan pattern of Football and he is very solid he can mark control and pass the ball very well.

  5. For anyone who think Milan should keep Bennacer, please remember how much game he has missed. Yes, I know he was great when he played, I really like him. But surely it is not a good practice for Milan to rely to any player who keep missing games. We should put aside the sentimental view, that he was part of scudetto winning team. If anyone argue about how Kalulu now seems fit in Juve, it is a different club, where different tactic approach. Once again, I will surely miss him if he leaves, but the truth is, I have missed him since couple of years maybe from the regular starting line up.
