Tuttosport: Milan willing to double star’s salary to secure renewal – the one obstacle

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are hoping to extend the contract of midfielder Ismael Bennacer and they seem willing to double his current pay, a report claims.

Bennacer showed his importance to the project and to Stefano Pioli’s tactical mechanisms last season as he started 31 Serie A games in the Scudetto-winning campaign, forming a formidable pairing with both Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie.

According to reports from Tuttosport (via MilanNews) this morning, Milan have every intention of extending Bennacer’s contract beyond the current deadline of 2024, with the Algerian having signed a five-year deal upon joining from Empoli in summer 2019.

This year Bennacer will have an even more central role in the Rossoneri midfield and he is demonstrating that he is ready for it, as shown by the excellent performance and goal against Atalanta on Sunday night.

Maldini and Massara are working to extend the agreement until 2026 or possibly even 2027, doubling the player’s salary from €1.7m net per season to €3.5m. At the moment the biggest obstacle concerns the impossibility of applying the Growth Decree tax discount, because Bennacer does not qualify.

  1. I mean, that’s not an ‘obstacle’, that’s just the reality. Just means in English terms (ie pre-tax) he would be being paid ~€125,000 a week, whereas for the last 3 years it’s been closer to €40,000 per week.
