GdS: Milan evaluating versatile Ajax defender – an insight into his background

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are evaluating the possibility of making a move to sign Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui as a free agent, according to a report.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have taken a look at the background of the player, starting with when he was 16 at Ajax and he thought about leaving them to pursue a career in law, but instead decided to continue with football and has since become one of ‘the best right-backs in Europe’.

He is an idea for Milan at the moment as he was offered to the Rossoneri management, with Paolo Maldini and Ricking Massara evaluating the Moroccan with interest. The 24-year-old has 5 goals and 3 assists in 26 games so far this season and Ajax have lost only twice with him on the pitch, against PSV and Utrecht.

He plays best as a full-back but when he was younger he played as a winger and has even spent time as a central midfielder, showing an almost Florenzi-esque level of versatility.

Mazraoui was raised in the Netherlands by Moroccan parents, born in the same city as Matthijs De Ligt (Leiderdorp) and he chose to play for Morocco, but his relationship with their coach Halilhodzic is not good, meaning he hasn’t played for his country since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He is appreciated by coaches and team-mates for his flexibility and sacrifice, having come through the Ajax system to boast 128 games, 10 goals, 8 assists and a couple of individual awards including Ajax talent of the year in 2019. Milan are evaluating an exciting opportunity.
