GdS: From the coach to the calendar – four reasons Milan should dream of the Scudetto

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have taken top spot back for the time being, and there are four reasons that fans of the Rossoneri can really begin to dream of the Scudetto.

La Gazzetta dello Sport highlights each reason, starting with the head coach Stefano Pioli, who is the real top player of this team. He seems to have a knack for making the right technical, tactical and managerial choices, raising the level of the squad by getting the most out of young players like Leao and Tonali.

Then there is the fixture list, because Milan’s calendar is certainly the best on paper of the three contenders for the Scudetto in the short term at least, with Salernitana (away), then Udinese and Empoli (at home), then Cagliari (away) and Bologna (at San Siro). There is the big game away at Napoli after Udinese though, plus Lazio, Fiorentina, Verona, Atalanta and Sassuolo one after the other to end the season.

The third factor is the team’s leader, which – after a tough first season – has remarkably become Sandro Tonali. He is potentially the most complete and important player for the team at the moment and Milan revolve around him also because of the importance of the double pivot.

Finally, there is the rotation. Hopefully Ibrahimovic will soon be back to allow Giroud to manage his minutes, and then Rebic is back but must find his best form, while the same can be said for Kessie. Krunic is a reliable option for two roles while Kalulu has shown himself to be the same.

In short, there is the depth to keep building on Pioli’s work, to keep up the good form in the coming weeks and to take the title race all the way.

  1. We do have a good schedule for the next two months, with only the away at Napoli as the most difficult, but we finish with 5 straight tough games in what will be the crucible of the season: Lazio (A), Fiorentina (H), Verona (A), Atalanta (H) and Sassuolo (A). If we are to win the scudetto I think we’ll need to be on top of the standings by the Lazio game, hopefully by at least three points (and Inter having played their makeup game).

  2. atalanta, lazio, napoli.
Lazio is doable, can’t easily see more than a draw against napoli, depends who turns up on the day & how well we control Malinovski
