GdS: The total revenue Milan, Inter and Juve have made in the Champions League since 1992

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have a proud history when it comes to the Champions League, having won the competition seven times which is the second-most of any European team behind Real Madrid.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) takes a look at the revenues that teams have made in the Champions League from the 1992-93 season (after the name changed from the European Cup) to the end of the 2020-21 season.

The first thing to notice is that Milan are tied in 16th place with Inter on €413m, behind Roma who are tied for 14th place with Porto on €448m. Juventus lead the way in Serie A with €934m.

The other notable figures include a top two of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid both standing at over €1bn, while the first English clubs don’t appear until 5th and 6th place with Chelsea and Manchester United occupying those respectively.

Napoli and Lazio are the only other two Italian clubs to get over €100m in revenues from the competition.

  1. I can’t believe that Roma / Arsenal / Borrusia M / Porto earned more than Milan and Inter??? That’s totally crazy! Maybe Milan didn’t play for many years in CL so I can partially understand that but Inter played all the time and still earned less than those clubs above who had humble results or even no success like Roma and Borrusia M.??? How’s that possible?

    1. Elena, it’s about consistency. Juve have both played the most often in the CL AND gone the deepest into the competition on average (the longer you stay in, the more you make). Inter have probable played a bit more often than Milan, but also often don’t get out if the groups. Meanwhile, Milan plays the least often of the three, but have also won the competition more then the other two. Basically, Milan’s CL win to participation ratio is probably the highest, but their overall participation percentage is lowest.

      1. Put another way statistically: based on past performance, which is no guarantee of future performance, Milan’s probability of winning the CL in any given year it participates is greater than Juventus’s and much greater than Inter’s.
