Il Giorno: Milan and Inter offered €36m contribution towards new stadium costs

News about AC Milan and Inter’s new stadium project continues to emerge all the time, and another update has arrived today.

The new stadium project involving the two Milan clubs descended into farce a few years ago, but every week it seems a new episode of the soap opera is added. Earlier in the summer we provided a summary of the key recent events in an article on our Substack, and yesterday the news was about more opposition.

Il Giorno (via MilanPress) speak this morning about the sale of the current stadium and the surrounding areas. According to the newspaper, the City of Milan are prepared to cover €36m of the costs of building the new San Siro and repurposing the current one.

The costs would be divided as follows: €12m for the demolition and reconstruction of the Patroclo tunnel (€60m total cost), €14m for the partial demolition and redevelopment of the San Siro and €9m for the reclamation of the land, which will be left green and returned to the council.

This amount, to clarify, will be contributed towards the clubs’ expenses when and if the project materialises, and therefore will not be a discount on the stadium’s value of €197m, which remains the figure to pay.

It’s worth remembering that September will be crucial, as the City Council approve or reject the notion of selling the stadium and surrounding area to Milan and Inter by the end of the month.

Starting November 10th, the historic restriction on the second tier imposed by the Superintendency will no longer allow the demolition of the current structure. Only if the property is private will the project be allowed to proceed.
