FootMercato: Milan join PSG and Barcelona in pursuit of Mahrez amid takeover speculation

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are interested in signing Riyad Mahrez to bolster the right wing position ahead of next season, according to a report.

FootMercato report how Milan are in the process of being bought for around €1bn by Investcorp, an investment fund based in Bahrain, and they have plans to make some big signings in the summer such as Sven Botman and Renato Sanches from Lille.

They add that Milan are ‘very interested’ in signing Mahrez, as the 31-year-old Algeria international striker is out of contract in 2023 and his future at Manchester City is currently uncertain. He has 11 goals and 5 assists in 25 league games so far this season, plus 6 goals in the Champions League.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG are also keen on signing the former Leicester man but Milan have ‘decided to join in the battle’. The possibility of playing alongside friend and compatriot Ismael Bennacer could be tempting, while any potential transfer fee ‘would not be a problem’.

  1. With Botman, Origi and possibly Sanches already in the bag, Mahrez would be massive. We would be formidable for sure. Still need another striker though.

  2. I dont understand why in the lastt two weeks so many rumors come and go like water about signings big names when clearly nothing is true.

    1. because of the sale to Investcorp people can just throw names at the wall hoping something will stick. Unil sale is done, new management appointed and mercato starts, everything written is just wishful thinking and nothing else. But at least now, we can allow ourselves to dream, at least for a while longer.

    1. Yeah… Let’s take a hasbeen that Real is trying to offload because of his insanely high paycheck. Not only has he been sh*t for the last god knows how long, he hasn’t even played consistently and when he did he was worse than Saladmaker.

But sure, let’s take him over a player who delivers consistently for years in one of the toughest leagues and UCL too.

        1. Guy that can only play in his mediocre little club, when there is zero pressure and/or expectations? Guy who when called for NT disappears into nothingness?

          Great idea!

  3. First it was Bernardo Silva last summer.
Than it was Raheem Sterling a month ago.
Last week it was Gabriel Jesus.
This week it’s Riyad Mahrez turn.

  4. Yea, I will believe Mahrez when I see it — I agree people are just throwing names around of top notch RW players because it is of course our weakest position (with CAM).

As for the Asensio comments, I think Shiva you’re being a bit harsh. He had ACL surgery in 2019 and that is tough to recover from; but he’s worked his way back and he still has an amazing rocket of a left footed shot. He has lacked some consistency though and with Rodrygo as attacking RW and Modric as RW midfielder (and both Valverde and Lucas Vasquez on the right side), it’s been tough for him to get consistent minutes. I’m not advocating paying a big price for him and his new agent likely will ask for a lot so probably not worth it. However, he’s only 26 years old and before that ACL injury, he was showing potential be a very special world class player. Who knows? If he leaves Madrid to a club where he can get minutes, he very well could prove himself to still be a great player who can score a lot of goals.
