CorSport: Milan meet entourage of €25m Roma defender- a potential Botman alternative

By Oliver Fisher -

Yet another alternative to Sven Botman has emerged as AC Milan look to recruit a quality centre-back this summer, according to a report.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) reports that Roger Ibañez has entered Milan’s sights in their search for a new central defender and he was the subject of discussions in a meeting yesterday.

Milan directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara met with his representatives Lodovico Spinosi and Stefano Mauri (together with the intermediary Carmelo Barillà) at Casa Milan, who also look after the interests of Douglas Luiz and Gabriel Jesus.

Ibañez could represent a valid and concrete alternative to Botman if the negotiation between Milan and Lille were to fall apart and Newcastle United were to win the race to sign him, as the Brazilian would be a cheaper option given he has a valuation of €25m.

In 2021-22 with the Giallorossi – which culminated in winning the UEFA Conference League – Ibañez played 51 games and scored 4 goals.

  1. Oh God no…. he makes somewhere between 3-5 huge errors per game.. looks good usually and then makes a massive mistake often resulting in a goal.. such a sloppy player. They should pay us 25m to take him.

  2. He is right footed so it wouldnt make much sense according to the reports of us looking for a left footed cb as replacement for romagnoli.

      1. I know that. But, why anybody talks with intermediars, when player have agent? How many people has to be paid, when deal come to the end? Is it forbiden that club talk directly with player?

        1. not really sure but it seems to be for softening the negotiations between the two parts. clubs cant talk directly to a player without the clubs permision that is unless the players contract is due to expire within half a year.

  3. Fluff article and more of a click-bait, those agents represent many many players, so it’s not necessarily Roger Ibanez the target (Roma won’t sell him cheap). For example, they also represent another center back, Marlon of Shakhtar Donetsk (previously of Sassuolo) who probably can come on a cheap transfer or loan with option (considering the situation in Ukraine) as a 4th center back.
I think at this point, Milan will spend a lot of money for only three types of players that have one or more of the following qualities (immediate starter, 21 or younger which can be skipped from the lists or home grown in Italy since we have slots available… e.g. Traore of Sassuolo is considered home grown in Italy)
In this context, Roger Ibanez is not worth it unless he comes on a loan … he’s not cheap, he’s not immediate starter material and he’s not Italy-grown
