CM: At least €20m – Milan must cough up funds to replace Maignan in summer

Ahead of the summer mercato, it seems that two goalkeepers are taking AC Milan’s interest currently, with Mike Maignan likely to leave.

There has been no shortage of goalkeepers linked to Milan in recent months, and whilst Maignan edges closer to the door, that number should only increase. The Rossoneri have their parameters set, and at present, it seems two choices are leading the way.

Those are Noah Atoubolu and Elia Caprile, with both ticking several required boxes.

Their situations

According to Calciomercato.com, Atubolu is valued at around €20 million, which feels rather cheap for a goalkeeper with his potential in the current market. However, considering he is not playing for the biggest club in Germany, it is certainly feasible.

To add to this, his contract expires in the summer of 2027, so his value is only decreasing as time passes, which is worth considering.

Closer to home, Calciomercato.com reports that Caprile could be worth as little as €25m, which, although more, is not a bad price for a proven goalkeeper in Italy, who also would help with registration rules.

There is no denying that both are fairly significant prices for goalkeepers. However, paying this price now could save millions in the future. The Rossoneri may need to be bold in the summer, if not sooner.

  1. I don’t understand this in general. You have a good player that you like but won’t pay him more. But you’ll pay 20ml (5ml a year on a 4 year contract) plus wages for a new player. Give the old player you know a signing bonus and an increase in wages that ends up being less expensive then the total cost for the new player. Help me understand footballnomics.

      1. Seems ACM pi$$ed him off. There’s so many different stories that came out as M. B. noted it’s hard to know what’s true. But what is true it’s bad business to lose a top player on a free transfer. He either signs a new contract or in MM’s case, you should have sold him in the summer.

    1. I get what you are saying here and also shares the confusion but in regard of Maignan it seems to be more complicated as Milan and the player apparently already had agreed upon a renewal in the spring of 2025 but due to the teams lousy form then wanted to renegotiate a cheaper deal which Maignan understandably wasn’t happy about and now seems to not be willing to renew. This is at least what has come out in media reports.

      1. “due to the teams lousy form then wanted to renegotiate a cheaper deal”

        More like his lousy form.
Why would they wanna renegotiate a goalkeepers contract for a cheaper deal due to the teams lousy form if the goalkeeper was doing his job?
He was at fault for a bunch of goals during last season. Feyenord’s goal in the first few minutes of the 1st league comes to mind.
Clearing out a ball straight of Thiaw’s face for an own goal also comes to mind.

        1. I’m basically repeating what was up in the media and clearly it became more and more likely that we wouldn’t qualify for Europe so to your question, lost income. I wont deny that his form was probably also part of it. Either way I can understand Maignans frustration with the clubs handling of the matter as it seems amateurish and untrustworthy if they actually backtracked on their promises given to the player.
Either way I hope he renews his contract.

          1. You actually are not repeating what was said in the media.
The media was saying that HIS lousy form, age and being injury prone were the reason why Milan backed out of the agreement, not the teams lousy form.
At the same time Reijnders contract was inproved regardless of the teams lousy form because he wasn’t in a lousy form, but was actually the best player in the team.

          2. You do realize that there has been many articles on the matter for over half a year so they come with some variations ? I don’t have a habbit to make up stuff so I stand by what I said, but whatever floats your boat.

          3. Reijnders contract was extended at the same time when Maignan contract offer was pulled during a time when the team was in a lousy form, when they were midtable in serie A and knocked out of the UCL(something that Maignan played a big role in).

Clearly it became More and more likely we wouldn’t qualify for Europe?

Winning the Copa Italia final would have automatically qualified Milan for Europe. The final happened in the middle of May. Milan backed out of the Maignan contract extension before that.

“GdS: Milan revise Maignan offer downwards – the four
            replacements being scouted
            Oliver Fisher
            7 months ago, April 10th.

“La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the hope is that Maignan agrees to sign the contract with Milan and that, as captain, he reaffirms his bond with the club. An agreement had been reached in recent months at €5m net per year plus bonuses, though it was never signed.

As the weeks went on, COMBINED WITH SOME DISAPPOINTING PERFORMANCES FROM THE FRENCHMAN, have led the club to reflect and revise their offer downwards. Now it is a €4.5m per year take it or leave it offer, with an extension until 2028 or 2029.”

          4. I don’t really see what Reijnders has to do with it firstly different player different scenario. The Dutch player also initially earned less than 2 mil pr. year if i remember correctly which also made a renewal easier. Neither do I actually refute what you are saying as I’m well aware that there has been many articles published on the matter but I do nevertheless stand by what I said as one article doesn’t exclude a different one and I know what I’ve read.
Contract renewal broke down to Milan backtracking on an already agreed upon deal, Sporting and economic reasons. Sure we could have qualified via the Coppa Italia and I probably should have expressed myself differently there but that would still have been with a huge financial loss compared to playing in CL.
Either way I doubt we will get any closer on it as its basically hearsay and nobody except for the involved parties actually knows what’s up or down on the matter and not much is leaking through the club or player.

    2. Good points Jim. I love MM too but we also have to look at age, asset value and appreciation/depreciation…MM’s value will only go down after re-signing on a high(er) salary. That said it will be a shame to lose him on a free.

Whereas Atubolu (correct spelling-not 1st the one in the article) and Caprile will go up (based on transfer value, age and talent).

    1. A real boss!!! Will hurt to lose MM but will hurt less with Noah on safeguarding the net. Honestly I think he’s the future world #1…we have to get him, and fast too!

      Dynamic and explosive…like a MM 3.0.
