Milan on track to smash European post-2000 record for penalties awarded – the numbers

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are heading towards a Europe-wide record since the turn of the century in terms of penalties won, according to a report.

Milan got their 16th penalty of the season last night as a handball from Larsen allowed Franck Kessie to convert and snatch a point against Udinese with virtually the last kick of the game.

The introduction of VAR has obviously had a profound impact on the awarding of penalties, especially in Serie A, and MilanLive reports how the most penalties awarded in one Serie A season this millennium is Lazio, as they got 18 penalties last season. Milan are currently at 16, sharing the second place since 2000 with Genoa.

In the ‘top five’ European Leagues there is only one team who have taken more penalties in a single season than Simone Inzaghi’s team: Luis Enrique’s Barcelona in 2015, who got 19 penalties.

The record of teams who win the most spot kicks in their division in a particular season is not favourable, as only in 3 cases out of 20 has the Serie A penalty leader actually won the league.
