GdS: Milan believe in Scudetto hopes – four players must be at their best to cultivate the dream

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan believe in their chances of winning the Scudetto with eight league games left between now and the end of what could be a very memorable campaign.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports how nobody wants to say the word ‘Scudetto’ at Milanello for fear of jinxing it and/or raising the expectations too high, but with 30 games gone and Milan top of the league it simply has to be the target.

The Rossoneri will resume league play at San Siro against Bologna after Napoli and Inter take the field against Atalanta and Juventus respectively, and there is a chance to perhaps further widen the gap over one or both.

For Milan to take care of business though four men must be at top form: Tonali, Leao, Giroud and Ibrahimovic. Milan have bridged the gap with the other big names in Serie A and now lead them all, but the the experience of Giroud and Ibrahimovic should help to avoid lapses in concentration while Leao is perhaps the only one capable of truly breaking matches and Tonali is a certainty in the ‘liquid’ midfield.

  1. Everybody has to be at his best not just 4 players. It’s a team made of the pick 11 + several reserves that are practically just as good as the first 11. To say that 4 must be on top form, it implies that at least 7 need not hit the top to make things happen. Wrong reasoning. You need everybody to produce 100% and be on fire to make things happen. Disagree with this article also because the persons mentioned are overwhelmingly militating from midfield up, as if the defence does not be to be at the top to block all oncoming onslaughts. It it useless for midfield and front to produce 3 goals to get hammered with 4. That is where all strength starts from THE DEFENCE. If the defence stops everything, just 1 goal is enough. The greatest Milan side had BARESI – MALDINI – TASSOTTI – COSTACURTA blocking most everything. This article ignores this aspect completely and thinks that matches are won simply because the people further up in the squad put the ball in the net. Anybody who has been watching soccer ages knows that that is if anything a THIRD OF THE STORY.

  2. hate to use the cliche that is used in all other team sports, however “defense wins championships” holds true as well on the pitch. All 11 have to perform at their best….and in soccer a good defense directly contributes to offensive runs Theo – Leao or Giroud, as an example. 100% all the time by 100% of the squad is a tall request , but that is what it will take, every game from here on out is the/a championship game, 1 point could be the difference. And unique to soccer is that an offensive player such as Junior or leao must immediately be defensive when the ball is lost or after an attempt on goal. Pioli has to instill attention to detail, as an example when Leao makes a run and gets the ball stolen from him ,he cannot throw up his hands and mope around hanging his head looking for a penalty, he has to get mad and immediately persue. Saelaemakers has no where the talent of Leao but is relentless when he gets dispossessed. Tonali the “cane pazzo” has what it takes. Give me 11 like him. Look and act like a champion.
