GdS: ‘No trace left’ – Milan’s Scudetto winning defence ‘crumbled’ in three years

AC Milan won the Scudetto in 2021/22, but the backbone of that team has not been completely dismembered – a topic made even more important with the current defensive struggles.

The past two seasons have been underlined by issues in the defence. Last season, it was noticeable due to the defensive injuries, and then this year, it has been a case of mix and match. Both are damaging in their own way, and neither is positive really.

You could argue that the latter issue still exists in a way, but it may not be as extreme as it was with Paulo Fonseca. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of consistency at the back which hurts several things.

As a result of this, the case of the Scudetto defence has been brought back into the limelight by Gazzetta dello Sport.

As their report states, within less than three years, the title-winning defence has ‘crumbled’, leaving fans to question what happened. Fine-tuning obviously occurs, but to the extent that the Rossoneri have is somewhat questionable.

In a ‘sensational case’, the defence has disintegrated, and the ‘jewel’ has disappeared. The report states that the Scudetto was won by that defence, and the fact that the players in that team have not departed or worsened, is a real worry.

Two have left – Davide Calabria and Pierre Kalulu – and two have remained – Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez – but, in all honesty, Theo and Tomori of the Scudetto season are nowhere to be seen. A depressing yet blatantly obvious picture.

    1. Nope. It wasn’t the midfield either. It was the perfect balance of good defense, good midfield and good offense. None of them were the best of “more important than the other” but they all worked well together.

Mike was excellent, the defense was solid, midfield gave 100% every match, the attackers score important goals. I’m tired of people arguing over who won the scudetto for us when it’s so bloody obvious it was all of them. All of them together. You win trophies when you work as a team.

  1. Theo is Theo this is his first flop season.

It all depends now what club thinks and if they are going to keep or sell him.

Tomori unfortunately becomed less than average player. After scudetto he never upgrade his play to be best Serie A defender. We can see how easily and Pavlovic tooled his place.

So problem with Milan transfer strategy is the players who arrive here as perspective players – never become super stars.

    Same thing with Leao.

  2. I think that the problem is the middle field and not the defense. Kessie, Tonali, and a healthy Bennacer provided great protection for the defense. The current middle field is like a colabrodo-colander.

    1. They make mistake by not trying to keep Bennacer.

I think Bennacer Reijnders and Fofana would be OK trio, hopefully if Benny stays without injury.
And Musah like back up option.

But Sergio now uses Felix. Who is average at least and only 2 midfielders.
Attack can’t score a goal and defence without strong midfielder are like amateurs.

    2. I agree. The downfall began with the failure to extend Kessie. I then greatly accelerated with the sale of Tonali. If the club needed cash to strengthen multiple positions it should have sold Theo or Leao the summer Tonali was sold. Tonali is a player you can build a team around, Leao and Theo aren’t.

    3. And now Leao and Theo are probably going to get sold anyway, because you can’t build a squad around them and the failure to do so is causing us to lose CL revenue.

  3. Forward? Midfield? Or Defense? Nothing wrong with them, for sarcasm they are just a pawn, what is wrong is the mastermind The maestro but if you think about it there is nothing wrong with fonseca or conceicao. well football is a sacred sport and milan has a deep football culture and the redbirds have come to ruin it so now it is karma that he will get. look at all the bad luck that is happening to milan now. It is not just bad play anymore
