CM: Milan struggling to score but the defence is leading Europe in 2022 – the data

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have been hit by scoring woes in the last few games but the defensive record is not a cause for concern, a report has highlighted.

As Calciomercato.com report, the two consecutive 0-0 draws against Bologna and Torino called into question whether the forwards are crumbling under the pressure and now Milan have lost the grip they have on the title, while Inter could now overtake the Rossoneri if they win their game in hand against Bologna.

The Diavolo have scored just 4 goals in the last 6 league matches, and that means that the 5 clean sheets in a row (6 when counting the cup) has not yielded 6 wins as it perhaps should have done.

Milan have one of the best defensive records in Europe though, it must be highlighted, as they have conceded just 7 from matchday 20 to today. No Serie A team have let in less as Inter have conceded 9 goals, Napoli 12 and Juventus 11.

Looking at the ‘top five’ European leagues, Pioli’s team remains firmly in the lead: only Liverpool are level with Milan (7), Manchester City have let in 8 and many clubs are on 9 (Barcelona, Leipzig, Monaco, Real Sociedad, Sevilla and Strasbourg).

Real Madrid are on 10, PSG have conceded 12 and Bayern Munich are on 13, the leaders of the other leagues in Europe. Defence is the strong point of Pioli’s team, who now have to start scoring again.

  1. do they give out a trophy for being the best defensive team ? or like a patch for your jersey that signifies “most clean sheets” ? Last time I looked the team that scores the most points wins.
