Tuttosport: Milan to name Champions League squad today – Adli or Thiaw could miss out

By Oliver Fisher -

With the transfer market closed, the time has come for the teams that will participate in this season’s European competitions to name their squad lists.

Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes that Milan will also have to present theirs in view of the start of the Champions League, scheduled for Tuesday when they will travel to face Red Bull Salzburg pitch.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tiemoué Bakayoko will certainly not be part of the list as the Swede is still injured and will only return to the field in January, while the Frenchman is no longer part of Stefano Pioli’s plans.

There should be four other exclusions as Milan will not be able to occupy all of the 25 slots available due to not having four players that came through their own academy, with only Davide Calabria, Matteo Gabbia and Tommaso Pobega. In addition, there are three home-grown players (Italian academies) in Mirante, Tonali and the injured Florenzi.

Tatarusanu, Ballo-Touré, Thiaw and even Adli could therefore miss out, while the new signing Aster Vranckx could be part of the list, but it seems to be between him at the former Bordeaux man. Rade Krunic – who is currently injured but should return to Pioli’s disposal at the end of September – should remain on the list.

    1. come on man, hauge has now been loaned out to gent so no reason to keep complaining about that transfer as he apparently isnt even deemed good enough to currently play for eintracht frankfurt.

      1. I’m not complaining at all, I am just making a prediction that Adli will be treated the same as Adli and he will be sold for profit next season.

        1. Ok fair enough Shiva but in hindsight milan actually made a decent sale in regard of hauges departure.
I doubt milan will sell him on to another club in a matter of a year so people should just show some patience and above all faith in piolis decisions and work as he has proven to know what he is doing. Pretty confident that adli will play his share of games this season but whether its in cl might be a different matter but i personally hope he will be part of the cl squad nevetheless.

          1. Only way he stays if we don’t buy Brahim, because and even then… CDK will be a starter for sure, so I’m not sure he will want to stay unless they change his position.

          2. Who knows what might happen, milan might buy him and then madrid ends up activating the buyback clause or milan just selling him to a different club if he is deemed surplus to requirements but with a possibility of earning some cash.

Well i see the adli aquistion both for the cam role and as a potential backup for bennacer so i do believe he will have his opportunities to play.

          3. “@bb For whatever reason Pioli loves Brahim. I’m hoping M&M will be more pragmatic.”

Yeah. Let’s stay positive. I’m sure M&M will realize he’s not worth the $$$s – and CDK & Adli leapfrog him in the pecking order anyway.

    2. An average player like Hauge still getting rated by some fans.
He is on his 3rd team in 2 years and he is downgrading with every move. Milan, Frankfurt, Gent.
There was nothing special about Hauge. It was a great business by Maldini to sell him while other clubs were yet to realize his actual worth

  1. So max 20 outfield players for the group stage really! Tough choices to make, surely no Thiaw, seeing as Gabbia’s still here, and no Adli seeing as Diaz, CDK, Krunic can all play that role.

  2. Diaz, Messias should be excluded in that case. They have despite lack of competion and numbers of matches failed to deliver (Diaz 80% of the time). But that will never happen sense Pioli will most likely start them against Salzburg

    1. Actually Diaz is more useful in UCL than Serie A as Italian clubs focus on defending and they make Diaz’s life hard. Playing against teams such as Salzburg means more room for Diaz.

  3. Seems Tuttosport miscounted, it should be Zlatan & Bakayoko + 5 players (not just +4). There are 30 players in the 1st team squad and only 23 of them can be registered. Looks like they forget Lazetic.

    1. Might be:
      Ibrahimovic
      Bakayoko
      Tatarusanu (replaced by primavera GK)
      Ballo-Toure
      Lazetic
      Thiaw
      Vranckx

Nb: Dest can also play at LB.

      1. @Yelnats Ok I need some explanation here. Is Thiaw not able to be on list B because he was not able to play for Milan for the last two years?. He is qualified age-wise for Under 21 (born after Jan 1 2001) but not on availability to play within the last 2 years for Milan, correct? CDK has the same issue.

I have this as the list. Not sure how it goes to 5 as ur saying, apart from Baka and Ibra

        23 (* homegrown, ** club trained)

        GK: mirante*, ( tata), Maignan
Def: Calabria*/**, Florenzi*, Kululu, Tomori, Kjaer, Gabbia*/**, Theo, (Fode), Dest, (Thiaw)
Mid: Adli, Bennacer, Tonali*/**, Pobega*/**, Krunic, (bakayoko), (Vranckx), CDK
Att: Giroud, origi, Diaz, salad, leao, Rebic, Messias, (Ibra)

Parentheses are those who may be left out. This frees up 2 spots for the homegrown/club trained which we need to register to make it 25…or not.

  4. I don’t understand exactly how the list works but why can’t they add 2 primavera players to meet the homegrown quota and fill all possible spots?

    1. thats not the issue actually milan have more non academy players i dont know what that slot is but we canonly have 17 there ig and we have more so some cannot register

    2. It can but also not mandatory. Tatarusanu seem likely to be replaced by primavera GK.

Note that homegrown quota is not mandate, it is resource. Milan can chose to use it or not use it. There is no punishment for leaving it empty, it just means you waste the slot.

      1. Note that primavera players who already in the club for 2 years can use B list (not needing homegrown slot). Only primavera player who had not been in the club for 2 years need a slot in the A list to be able to play.
