CM: Five options and few certainties – Milan’s goalkeeping department set for overhaul

By Oliver Fisher -

The department most in question for AC Milan at the moment seems to be the goalkeeping department, with very few certainties to call upon at the moment.

Calciomercato.com report that in addition to the injured Mike Maignan, the shaky Ciprian Tatarusanu and Antonio Mirante plus the teenage Andreas Jungdal, the name of Devis Vasquez must be added as he has arrived from Paraguayan side Guaranì, but even he is considered a signing for the future.

The arrival of Vasquez comes as a surprise, but he evidently hides a precise plan: to add new blood to the goalkeeping department, of which only Maignan is sure of his place at the moment.

Jungdal is destined to leave on loan this month, Vasquez must evaluated, while on the Mirante and Tatarusanu front there are no signs of renewing their contracts expiring in June. Regarding the last two, Pioli must clarify who will be the starter in the absence of Maignan, who Milan hope to recover for the first leg match of the Champions League round of 16 against Tottenham, scheduled for February 14th.

In the last friendly test against PSV, Mirante was deployed from the first minute and he has not played an official match since 6 May 2021.

Neither he nor Tatarusanu have given ample guarantees, also for this reason Massara and Maldini could decide to give Pioli a new goalkeeper before the end of the current window, with all the clues leading to Marco Sportiello of Atalanta.

A contract has already been agreed with him before 2023-24 given his deal with Atalanta will expire. To sign him immediately, Atalanta are asking for €4-5m, a figure currently considered excessive. If Maignan’s return is postponed, Milan could decide to make an effort.
