ML: Why Milan decided not to go for a top-level coach despite fan discontent

The decision to hire Paulo Fonseca has been met with some backlash, but AC Milan have their reasons for looking in the Portuguese manager’s direction instead of looking at candidates with a potentially higher reputation.

Initially, Milan’s man was Julen Loptegui, but after extreme backlash from the fans, a decision was made to move away from a future with him in charge, and the Spaniard was informed of the decision via a phone call from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which ended that chapter.

Following this, several candidates have been linked, and few have cycled in the role of the favoured candidate, but with Lille confirming that Paulo Fonseca has departed the club and a new club being mentioned in their statement, it seems like the move is imminent.

A similar trend occurred, and outcry has been in place about the Portuguese coach’s credentials, but it seems the Rossoneri are set on the former Lille manager, and Milan Live claim there is a vital reason why.

Firstly, the management believes that there is not a need for a ‘top-level’ coach currently. Instead, they believe that it would be better to focus on purchasing players and reinforcing the team. However, they still see him as a great coach and a better option than gambling on a big name with a big wage attached.

  1. Yes a top level coach would demand a core to be build and not sold and team be reinforced properly. The direction has been set 😅

  2. ‘There is no need for a top level coach at this stage’

Literally the most unfootball comment ever. Hi f that’s true then there is no leg for RedTurd to stand on. A great coach makes average players win titles…Fergie proved this

‘A great coach is essential for any great team – Brian Clough

    1. A top level coach with top players will win you trophies that will earn you money.. Madrid. Man city PSG Bayarn are examples

  3. I am not excited about Fonseca at all.

But Bayern and Chelsea are doing something similar with their coaching decisions. I’d like to understand if I am seeing a trend that doesn’t really exist or if there is a new way of looking at coaches for big teams.

    1. Comparing the likes of Maresca and Kompany with Fonseca is not apple to apple. Fonseca has experience more or less 13 years with no significant achievement. While both of the first only have less than 5 years experience.

I’d rather have someone like Maresca and Kompany in Milan. Young, fresh, exciting. Many compare Fonseca with Sacchi or Capello. No, it’s different. Just compare how many years they have in top flight before joining Milan.

  4. Wow there, MilanLive. Top notch journalism there. Milan didn’t hire a top level coach because they didn’t think they need one. No Sh|t, Sherlock! Really?? LOL!!!

This is how you report news without actually reporting any news. Absolute circus.

    1. “Secondo le informazioni raccolte dalla redazione di MilanLive.it, nella testa della dirigenza del Milan c’è l’idea che non serva per forza un tecnico top.”

Weird piece of news, indeed. Maybe they also have a mole inside Casa Milan haha

  5. Well, there is a transfer bomb for you – Milan contacted Allegri who is keen to take over Milan (Rai sports).

  6. If they plan on buying out his last year after this season to get Klopp, that is a stroke of genius. I hope they inject some Paramount money in a sponsor deal while keeping Fly Emirates. Put them on the back of the kit, side of the kit, get a stadium naming deal and just boost in some funds.

  7. That’s funny because why did I just read that milan have made contacts with allegri about a possible move. Does this management even know whats going on?

      1. Well it’s either milan are amazing at keeping a secret and the media has no idea what’s going on so they throw out names or milan are run by a bunch of clowns

        1. The correct answer was the media has no idea what’s going on so they throw out names. I hope you learned your lesson on this one.

  8. At this point in time I have come to realise the jokes on us Milan fans. The media loves this.. just throw anything out there and see Milan fans go hysterical..😁

Have you seen how outrageous some of the stories are.. 1 day it’s one direction, the next day a completely different direction. You might not like the management all that much, but come on this is getting ridiculous all this stories coming out.. Media is just throwing anything out there to see what sticks.. Do you really think the management will open their mouth and say such a thing.. even in casa Milan.. “Staffs meeting for 3pm. we want to tell you why we went for Fonseca and please don’t tell or leak it to the media or those journalists that are just outside at the parking lot”.. Sounds true right?..😎

    1. Why do you think big companies like Apple spend so much money to prevent leaks? There are many people working in Casa Milan, they have family, friends, maybe they speak to them, maybe they’re getting paid by journalists to disclose some intel, there is a lot of possibilities.

      1. Completely agree with what you are saying. Also the reason why when they have such high level meetings, very few people and phones usually off and so on.. I just used this as an example because some of the news are wild speculations and it’s non stop.

      2. Inter was able to get Moggi phone messages, no? It’s so easy for anyone with a level of access to get that info and sell it

    1. The fans revolted against Pioli, the Roma debacle in the Europa was the final straw… But certainly Pioli doesn’t look so bad now in hindsight.

  9. I remember when Milan was giving Real Madrid a stick competition. I was proud to be both Milan and Italy fan. Fast forward, 2024 and Madrid has more than doubled the gap. Instead making decisions that puts us closer to competing with the best in Europe, it seems we don’t even know what we’re supposed to do.

  10. Felt upset&sad everytime i heard & read the AC Milan management movement in mercato.
No more AC Milan glory, embarrassing is a normal things when suffer loss against Inter

  11. Top level coach can boost the players’ value multiple times. What a stupid move. No Italian core in the team and rely on aging Giroud for many years as well. Should take some examples from Marotta in transfer dealing. Dude is excelling in transfers both at Inter and Juve (his only mistake was not selling that defender to PSG).

    1. Palladino already signed with Fiorentina. Truth be told, I’d rather have someone exciting and less experienced like Palladino than the pretty experienced with no significant achievements like Fonseca.

  12. i thought we change Pioli because we want to go to next level, an upgrade, higher goal, better squad etc.
now i realize why they change Pioli is because they think we are over-achieving, we need to slow down, focus in easier goal which is keep the money & get it more. build a house (stadium) as an excuse (fr the next 7 season) of course.

i’m Milanista since beginning (5yo) till forever..
the 1st football match i’ve watch is 1989 UCL semi-final Milan 5 – 0 Madrid, i’ve become Milanista after that, even before i know alphabets.

today Milan is opposite of Milan i know, Milan remind in my heart, but those people who change my Milan to be proudly loser club i’ll never respect,
as an Indonesian i support Como too, while waiting/ hoping maybe my Milan will come back as we belong.

good wine is still taste good even if you drink it from any glass, but you can’t eat sh!t even is on the golden plate.

  13. Just stopped, we didn’t need a a better coach than Pioli. We need someone like Pioli but who will give young players a change and also will not play player out of postion. Many of you forget that Adli is a number 10, a player that plays behind the striker, but Pioli RLC there while Adli was put in the middle of the park. To me it makes more sense to have Adli as a number 10 and play RLC in the midle of that park as he is stronger and that is his natural position
Also, under Pioli our youngsters only played when the senior players for that position was out. We have tremendious young players but the progress was stalled because Pioli didn’t give them any change. He only played them when he was forced and even if some of them played good foodball, it wasn’t enough to more minutes once the owner that position was back. Also, unde Pioli the team rotation was horrible which why I think we had so many injuries

    1. Hard to swallow pills: that’s because Pioli is a poor coach. He had one great year at Milan where he won Scudetto by help of Zlatan’s mentality (every player claimed that) and that’s all. Aside from that in few years achieved nothing on every path (cup, europe, league) having strongest squad Milan had in over 10 years.

If he would be so good why any serious team is not interested in him?

      1. I’m not saying we should have keep Pioli, but I think Fonseca its not such a bad coach. He will give our young players a chance. We can not compete with the top clubs in regards of spending, but I think Fonseca is a good coach to help your young talents grow and build a young strong team. Once we have our squad developed maybe we can go for a better coach, but in the mean time I think Fonseca may be the right coach for us. He’s good at developing young players and also its not bad with squad rotation. If the is tactically at the same level as Pioli, proper squat rotation should give him better result since our players won’t suffer from so many injuries. I’m not saying our board made the best decision, but its not that bat either. And if this does not work lest hope that will open redbird eyes and understant that we need quality in every sector of the club and that the moneyball approach may need a rethink

And yes, you are right, Pioli got a lot of help from Zlatan, not to mention Maldini was there and he is someone who the plyers respect for what he represents to the game and to Milan history.

Now if, you ask me I will take Jonathan David, a pure striker and a strong DM. I don’t think our defence is that bad. Its more or less the same defence we got when we won the title. But to have an exposed defence and and hope to have good results its just stupid. We need someone to protected the defence and I think that will be solved with a quality DM. Maybe get Hummels for the experince since he is free and start giving Simic more chances, he looks like a quality player.
Bonjourno will be a dream, but I don’t hink we have the spending power and any other defender will be the same quality as our CBs, si we might as well skipp that and give our youngsters a change

        1. Quite right. Another problem I had with Pioli was the complete disconnect between players when he rotated. It’s like during the week, he worked with the usual first team players and then a day before match day.. yeah I am going to do a massive rotation.

One question really is, how many top coaches are available right now?.. If you look at the ones available, they have issues and need significant investments or they have had a bad season or like Klopp that was going to take a break. In football, you are as good as your last season, especially true for coaches.

We forget Fonseca has won league titles in Ukraine. Yes people will shout, it’s the Ukrainian league, but same thing Spalletti had at zenith before he finally won with Napoli. Am not going to judge Fonseca because I cannot say he is a looser when he has not managed the top 2 or 3 teams where he was at. When he did, he won the league. Would you say Roma was the top 3 team or 4th team when he took over?.. No.. so let’s give it a chance

One thing we should all realise is that the long vision is that the stadium has to be built. There is no denying that anymore, we need a good stadium because all the dominating teams have their own stadium now. So it might be a long game but I can understand the pressure because Milan fans badly want that 2nd star which Inter has now.
