MN: Milan and Inter victim of Italian bureaucracy three years on from stadium project launch

By Oliver Fisher -

It was back in 2019 that AC Milan and Inter officially announced their intention to build a new stadium together, and three years later ground has not been broken.

MilanNews recall how Milan and Inter presented their ambitious project for a new, modern and functional stadium within a new sports district at San Siro to the Council of Milan and to their fans from across the globe back in 2019.

However, since that afternoon three years ago there has been a lot of bureaucracy and subsequently the delays which are ‘typical of Italian politics’, meaning there have been numerous changes to the €1.2bn project at the requests of the council.

Yet here we are without so much as a spade put in the ground nor a date when that will happen. There have even been recent rumours of a potential shift to the former Falck steelworks site in Sesto San Giovanni, with or without Inter.

Three years after the official presentation, neither Milan nor Inter know with certainty where and when they will have their new facility, one which is absolutely necessary to compete with Europe’s elite and to bridge the gap with other leagues.
