MN: Why Milan are keeping their options open in new striker search

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are firmly in the market for a new striker this summer but the Rossoneri are keen to ensure they keep their options as open as possible before the window opens.

As has been highlighted by Milan News, Milan simply have to sign at least one striker this season given it seems that Olivier Giroud will be leaving the club this summer on a free transfer.

The favourite target still seems to be Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, but there is still a chance that he will prove too expensive, and there is a lot of competition for him.

That one case study explains why Milan are keeping their options open. If they spend all of their time scouting Zirkzee and working on a deal, only to not get him, they are at square one for other players.

There are thought to be around 10 players that Milan are looking at as the new striker, with the biggest names being Zirkzee, Benjamin Sesko at RB Leipzig, Serhou Guirassy at Stuttgart, Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting and Jonathan David from Lille.

The club is ensuring that they have multiple different plans of action so they can react to setbacks when the window finally opens.

  1. I think teams in the fourth tier competitions “keep their options open” by looking at more than one player, no club in their right mind would do otherwise. Milan must have one of the biggest scouting teams in Europe, what are they doing if not watching potential targets? Especially if we are likely to get outbid for them by mid-tier English clubs.

    1. Yeah i agree and probably most teams that doesn’t have unlimited resources has hundreds of shortlisted players.

    2. It’s a PR game… first we say that we’re watching all the best players, then Cardinale says that the value of the striker is not defined by his price tag.

The way I see it is that management wants to buy a striker with a big name so that if things don’t work, they can say that “it’s not our fault, look everyone wanted this striker”.
They also want to say that “we were aiming for the best, it’s not our fault that he went for a team giving him a higher salary” .

I wouldn’t be surprised if we either have an agreement with Bologna for Zirkzee and will be announced the moment we end the season, or that we end up buying someone that was not mentioned at all in the past few months … dunno Pavlidis maybe… or someone less enticing like Odsonne Edouard or Broja.

Either way, it would be a big mistake if we waited until the transfer window opens to come to an agreement with a club/striker. Sesko I think would also be a valid option.

  2. Stop with the Gyokeres claims. He is certainly out of reach for Milan. He has a long term contract, is scoring and assisting a lot and has a 100 mln release clause. Why would SL make a big discount? To help Milan? Either he goes to the Premier League in the summer or stays in Portugal for another season.
