MN: Pioli studying three formations for Juventus clash – the 4-3-1-2 could return

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli is considering three different formations for the trip to face Juventus in the Coppa Italia return leg.

Pioli – in addition to all the speculation surrounding his future – will have a number of selection dilemmas to face. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Theo Hernandez and Samu Castillejo are suspended while Leo Duarte and Andrea Conti are expected to miss the game through injury,

One option the boss is considering – as per MilanNews – is the classic 4-2-3-1, with Romagnoli and Kjær anchoring the defence, with Conti on the right (if fit) and one of Laxalt or Calabria on the left.

In the midfield there will be Bennacer and Kessie, and then Bonaventura-Calhanoglu-Rebic behind Leao. A possible variant could be to start Paquetá and deploy him as a No.10, with Calhanoglu moving to the left.

Another solution being considered is the 4-3-3, a formation used on several occasions by the Rossoneri in recent seasons. The midfield would be Kessie, Bennacer and Calhanoglu, with Bonaventura and Rebic on the wings and Rafael Leao the centre-forward.

Another possibility in Pioli’s mind is to play a compact 4-3-1-2 with intensity in the middle of the field. The midfield would be Kessie, Bennacer and Bonaventura, with Calhanoglu the playmaker behind the two strikers Leao and Rebic.

In the coming days the situation will be clearer, but to date these are the possibilities that the head coach is considering.
