MN: Pioli to rest Giroud after 11 consecutive starts – the plan to replace him

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is expected to give Olivier Giroud a rest during Sunday’s trip to face Hellas Verona, according to a report.

According to MilanNews, Milan will resume training tomorrow at Milanello and will begin preparing for Sunday’s away match at Verona, who have just hired a new head coach in Salvatore Bocchetti after four consecutive Serie A defeats.

Pioli will have to evaluate the condition of his top players after an exhausting match against Chelsea in which they played 80 minutes (including stoppage time) with ten men. This applies to Olivier Giroud, who gave everything in his 11th game in a row as a starter.

The Frenchman should therefore get some rest this weekend, and obviously he will be able to come on the second half if necessary, but after playing so much the 36-year-old needs to regain some sharpness.

Ante Rebic and Divock Origi – both returning from injury – are in the running to replace him, with the former the favourite at the moment having come back a game prior to the Belgian.
