MN: The numbers behind Thiaw’s impressive performance against Torino

By Euan Burns -

One of AC Milan’s most important and impressive players in the crucial win over Torino on Friday night was Malick Thiaw.

The young German defender was handed a rare start by Stefano Pioli as he has seen limited minutes since joining the club from Schalke.

He is used to playing in a back three from his time in Germany and the coach clearly thought that he could show another dimension to his game against Torino.

As reported by Milan News, Thiaw was crucial in winning the ball back for the Rossoneri during the 1-0 win. He won the ball five times on the ground in seven attempts, and won three out of his four aerial duels.

It seems that should Pioli decide to persist with this system in defence, he could have Thiaw as one of his primary starters along with Pierre Kalulu and Fikayo Tomori when he returns from his injury.

  1. Yesterday was probably a brain fart. The law has already been established that players are never ready during their first season in Pioli’s team. I hope Pioli recovers soon.
