O Jogo: ‘Milan, watch out for Conceicao’ – why the Portuguese coach could still arrive

By Oliver Fisher -

Despite the fact that Sergio Conceicao signed a new multi-year contract just the other day, the Portuguese press believe that AC Milan are evaluating him as a potential option.

It has been a very strange few days at Porto. Firstly it was officially announced by the club that Conceicao had renewed his contract until June 2028. That meant that if he saw that deal through to the end, he will have been in charge for 11 years which is very rare in the modern game.

He has been heavily linked with the Lazio job given Igor Tudor is not viewed as a long-term replacement for Maurizio Sarri, while Bayern Munich and Barcelona were apparently sniffing yet they have gone down other routes.

According to this morning’s edition of O Jogo (via MilanNews), that renewal Conceicao signed might not end up being legally binding. The current president Pinto da Costa made it clear he wanted to keep him as head coach and he signed the contract as a guarantee in the event of re-election.

However, things changed over the weekend because the elections were won by Andre Villas Boas, who is now the new president of Porto. According to a clause, Conceiçao’s renewal was only valid with Da Costa so it could be ripped up.

For this reason, Milan could once again include Conceicao in their list of candidates to take over from Stefano Pioli, even if the situation is still in flux. However, the interest is there and the front page of the paper reads: ‘Milan: watch out for Sergio Conceiçao’.

  1. Conceisao is a good coach and he knows Serie A since he spent most of the time here as a player. I think his main priority is Porto, but dunno if the new president of Porto (Villa Boas) would want him or choose his own coach.

Whoever we choose, the full management needs to be 100% behind the coach and fully support him or it won’t work.
