Official: AC Milan vs. Roma starting XIs – two changes from Verona win

AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca has named his starting line-up for the final time in 2024, making a couple of alterations to face Roma.

Milan will bring the calendar year to a close when they welcome the Giallorossi to San Siro, hoping to give a big home crowd something to celebrate after a rollercoaster 2024.

The official starting XIs

Milan will be without Christian Pulisic, Rafael Leao, Yunus Musah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Noah Okafor, Luka Jovic and Alessandro Florenzi, who all miss out as they recover from injuries.

Fonseca has chosen to name a defensive department of Emerson Royal, Matteo Gabbia, Malick Thiaw and Theo Hernandez in front of the goalkeeper Mike Maignan, which has become his first choice.

The double pivot pairing of Filippo Terracciano and Youssouf Fofana remain after being used against Verona, with Tijjani Reijnders playing in an advanced midfield role.

The return of Theo at left-back and the other attacking absences mean that Alex Jimenez will be pushed up to play as the winger. Samuel Chukwueze will be on the other flank, and Alvaro Morata up front.

Official Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Emerson Royal, Gabbia, Thiaw, Theo; Fofana, Terracciano; Chukwueze, Reijnders, Jimenez; Morata.

Bench: Sportiello, Torriani, Calabria, Bennacer, Zeroli, Tomori, Liberali, Pavlovic, Bartesaghi, Camarda, Abraham.

Probable Roma XI (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Mancini, Hummels, N’Dicka; Saelemaekers, Kone, Paredes, Angelino; Dybala, Pisilli; Dovbyk.

Bench: De Marzi, Marin, Pellegrini, Abdulhamid, Shomurodov, Soulé, Celik, Hermoso, Dahl, Le Fee, Baldanzi, Zalewski, Sangare, El Shaarawy.

  1. Thought he said no in fielding Theo and Jimenez together.

And Chuk, will be basically useless just like previous games. But well, we don’t have any other option do we.

      1. That’s fair. He doesn’t really have a choice eh.
Was just saying we hope Chuk has a good game. The problem is the coach plays him too deep

  2. Looking forward seeing Terracciano in the midfield again. I always thought of him as a midfielder.

Regarding the game, I expect Ranieri to play low block, leaving us clueless again. This match has a draw written all over it. Hope to be proven wrong as usual.

  3. I’m not convinced with Terra in the midfield. Guess this is a good match for me to assess him as a midfielder better. Has done alright against Verona.

    1. You can’t deny the referee has been terrible. We can blame Fonzy all we want but changing him won’t change anything as long as this owners with Ibra continue to buy players without proper input of the coach. We were already linked with Emerson Royal before Fonzy was even talked about. Most of the players came before he started except Abraham that was a last minute buy. This is all not his fault

      1. Are you certain they’re buying without coach’s input? I’m pretty sure coach says what he needs, management present him with options and he picks. So Emerson was his pick. And sitting in 8th place in Serie A is on him.

  4. There’s a good reason Italian referees never officiate the World Cup finals. They’re the worst referees I’ve ever seen. SMH

      1. 😀 Ok I cant really blame him for it in that heated situation but I can’t imagine it will be looked upon mildly so he might have to serve a couple of matches banned then.

    1. Yep. It’s because he’s getting the ball further up the field. Unfortunately as he’s not tracking back deep to help Emerson, we’re getting exposed on that flank. This is what’s creating the whole wide open game

  5. Emerson praying when he comes on is proof that there is no God.
Because he’s still cràp, that means the praying isn’t working.

  6. Good choice by Fonseca to switch to 352 now we have no wingers.
Will be interesting to see Jimenez and Theo as wing backs.

Great to see Bennacer back, man we need him now
