Official: Milan defeat the final straw as Roma sack Jose Mourinho

AS Roma have confirmed this morning that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect.

A statement on Roma’s official website recalls that Mourinho was unveiled as their 60th coach in May 2021 and that he led the Giallorossi to the Conference League win in Tirana in May 2022, plus the Europa League final in Budapest last season.

However, things have not gone as well for the Portuguese this season. Roma currently sit ninth in the Serie A table with just eight wins from their opening 20 games, which puts them five points off the Champions League places.

Yacine Adli, Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez all scored on Sunday night as Milan beat the capital club 3-1 at San Siro in a game that Mourinho was suspended for after receiving a red card. The Rossoneri moved 13 points above them, as a result.

“We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said Roma owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
