Official: Pioli names 21-man squad for SPAL game – Four notable absentees

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has named a 21-man squad for the Coppa Italia clash against SPAL at San Siro on Wednesday night.

The last time that the Rossoneri failed to advance to the quarter-finals was all the way back in 2008-09, and they will be looking to avoid a repeat of that when they face Serie A’s bottom club at the Giuseppe Meazza for the second time this season.

Milan have won all five previous meetings against SPAL, the most recent being when Suso’s trademark free-kick earned Pioli’s first win as Milan boss back in October.

Pioli has announced his call-ups for the game with four notable exclusions.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has a thigh problem and his older brother will likely get the nod in goal, while Davide Calabria has a right ankle sprain without ligament damage.

Centre-back Mateo Musacchio has a left ankle contusion which means Simon Kjaer could get his first start, and Hakan Calhanoglu will miss out with a problem in his right calf.

The 21-man squad is as follows…

GOALKEEPERS
Begović, Donnarumma A., Soncin.

DEFENDERS
Conti, Gabbia, Hernández, Kjær, Romagnoli.

MIDFIELDERS
Bennacer, Bonaventura, Brescianini, Kessie, Krunić, Paquetá.

FORWARDS
Castillejo, Ibrahimović, Leão, Maldini, Piątek, Rebić, Suso.
