Ordine criticises Milan’s summer mercato: “Putting together only foreigners”

Journalist Franco Ordine has offered a reflection on AC Milan’s summer transfer window, suggesting that the purchases made were not what the club needed.

Milan made a total of seven signings for the first team, reinforcing various positions, and we took a look at the signings and the details of each in a piece after the window closed, from the contract length to the transfer fee.

What the table says is that the Rossoneri have lost three games in the league already and they currently sit 11 points off top, having been most recently beaten by a Napoli side who chose to go and get a winning coach in Antonio Conte and back him with €150m of spending.

Ordine published his weekly column for MilanNews and as part of it he looked back at the acquisitions that the management made in the mercato, outlining why they may have been wide of the mark.

“Let’s skip over the value of the Portuguese coach and instead look at the format applied by Milan. Moncada acted as sporting director (without being one) and as a market prompter,” he began.

“Emerson Royal arrived (with characteristics opposite to those requested), Pavlovic (still inexperienced as demonstrated by the push he received from Lukaku), Abraham, Morata, and Fofana, adapted to the role of breakwater that he did not play in Monaco as Fonseca himself often repeated.

“Here is the first point: Milan’s mercato has shown a superficial vision in the sales (Kalulu and Adli) and has followed a contorted line in the purchases independent of the new coach. Fonseca, without complaining, is also dealing with these ‘holes’ in the team and with a lack of substance that is the Italian rib of the team.

“By putting together only foreigners, the sense of belonging and also the sense of history of Milan is lost. Buongiorno, followed last January, before converging on the return of Gabbia (good solution) – was for example a negotiation to continue in the summer.”

  1. I don’t really care about nationality as long it’s a quality player. But we do lack Italians. Rules are rules and you need x amount of Italians in an Italian club. Atm we are way below x

  2. Yes, we had Buongiorno ready to join Milan. And then someone decided that it is too much money and it is better to burn 25M on Pavlovic.

    1. I’m pretty sure it was 19M hence the logic behind the move. You also have 4 players that under right management can shine. Fonseca is just too busy with babysitting and punishing lazy and disrespectful players….

    1. Emerson Royal is beginning to play and show his worth, his transfer will turn out good in the end.
Honestly the policy of the management of signing only foreign players is misguided, and sad, a nucleus of Italian players would bring discipline, pride and desire in the team, which is lacking, selling Maldini was a mistake, the Good thing is Milan has good Italian players in the Futuro and Primavera, which the club needs to start introducing gradually Berthasaghi , Zeroli , Coubis , Torriani should be introduced to the first team immediately

      1. Musah Schooled Royal on how to be right back against Napoli and he aint even a RB.
EVERY right back we played against performed better than Royal.
Its probably not even possible for this transfer to turn out good because its as best as Royal can do. This is his ceiling. He’s been there for over 6 years, hasnt improved a single bit.

      2. Emerson was again a disaster and Kvara’s goal was in him. If you’re playing a right back, you don’t let an inverted winger like Kvara cut inside, you force him onto his weaker foot. He didn’t.

  3. Nothing to do with player nationality, everything to do with terrible management. Milan is a rotting carcass at the moment, sadly.

  4. We had Tomori, and we still signed another error prone defender… Emerson wasn’t good enough for Tottenham but was deemed an upgrade by Milan… please no more signings, it’s better to field our youth players and watch them play woefully than sign professionals who produce subpar performances and make mistakes every time… Pavlovic will gift Milan fans high blood pressure before the season ends.

  5. emerson and pavlo is good signings but i was always commented about bring Parisi Ricci Baldazi Calafiori to the team before they got transferred now ill say again we need to sign Parisi Ricci Baldazi Pafundi Casadei Kayode Fabbian Cancalleri Colpani Gnonto Koleosho Miretti Raspadori Prati Rovella Leoni and Comuzzo from all of these my picks are : Ricci Parisi Pafundi Casadei Fabbian Cancalleri Raspadori Prati if cant ricci Rovella Leoni and Comuzzo bring back colombo and maldini

  6. This photo of Ordine is the most brilliantly triggering thing.

The guy looks like a total lunatic. I get sucked in every time.

  7. Why do i have the feeling that this clown management will go for Antony from Man Utd this winter? I’m really scared for future…

  8. “No immediate effect” strategy seems to be the plan here. Bring in reinforcements over a bigger period of time and slowly evolve this random collection of players into a “team”.

We’re clearly not a “team” yet. At least we don’t seem to be playing as one.
